I have recently downloaded and installed Avast on my MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion:

When I booted up my Mac, I received this error:

It opened to a page that stated that I needed to "repair" Avast, and it stated that I needed elevated privileges:

I am the ONLY account on my mac, and am elevated. So, I clicked on the "repair" button and it asked me to input my password(which I did) and then it started up to this screen:

Now, it won't update the virus defs, scan anything, or do ANYTHING.

I am really considering on just removing the AV altogether, as it is free, so it seems to not be worth the hassle. I am not one for messing around too much with "free" things, as it seems to me that free is too good to be true.

If I can get some help as to fixing this issue in a fairly prompt manner, then I will continue to use avast, but if this is how the free version is going to be, then why would I even consider buying the internet security from avast?

----------------------
BY THE WAY! I also closed avast like the SS above says, and reopened it. The problem still persists. How do you think I thought to SS every step? ;-)

-----EDIT-----
Will post the log file when I can figure a way around the "The message exceeds the maximum allowed length (10000 characters)." message.

Uninstall using the 'uninstall avast' menu option from the top menu bar, reinstall.

Can I add my own experience as a second on this. I do tech support and work with a lot of macs. I have had this issue on probably about 25% of the installs that i have tried with avast in recent months. I can't seem to get the install to work. Each one has the same repeated message in the console "Error connecting to master socket: connect(): No such file or directory" Its repeated over and over, just retry after retry. Generally if avast has troubles we end up installing Sophos or another free antivirus, but as an Avast user for many years I would love to actually be able to understand and fix this issue.

I have tried re-installing MANY times. Are there any other steps I can follow? I've done my homework here, but can't seem to find a reliable fix to what I am seeing as a common issue. I am using the newest release of version 7, downloaded fresh today. I re-downloaded the install 2-3 times to make sure it wasn't a file download issue.

Any suggestions are welcome!

Same problem here.  10.8.5.  Can't seem to get rid of it.

Same here, 10.7.5.  I've done several full Time Machine restores to earlier times (thinking the error was in some other software I'd installed along the way), but after a few days the error would return.  I've uninstalled Avast (I must say, the uninstaller does a pretty thorough job - I can find only a few log files left behind), and await further news on this bug.
