As I said, I am afraid to do so. When something works (albeit not right now in the right sense) I stick with it. I want to keep version 7. Where's the problem? Is it old? So?

Security wise, v9 is far better with the advanced technology, strong VPS updates and CSU. On top of this, it'll detect malware which v7 could not detect (not everything is based on signatures). On the other hand, I'd agree that v7 is the most stable avast! release for many people but it's not the best for security purposes. It's like running a car without a current MOT certificate.

Tis true, I get that.
As mentioned however, the best 'effective' security possible really is the end game.
Having said that, I also agree with the statement that so much depends on OS configuration and other installed software.
Myself personal, am not totally satisfied with version 9 however I do believe Avast is geared in the right direction with security. :)

There is nothing wrong with your reluctance. However avast has made some major leaps in detection
since v7.0.

But it's your computer.
I wish you well.

I have v2014 and I get auto-updates.
Have you even tried to install v2014?

FYI v2014 offers better protection than any previous version.
If you decide to upgrade to v2014 use the custom install.

I have latest version & autoupdate prob on both Win 7 64 & Win XP 32. Till this afternoon autoupdate was working fine as I have mentioned in one of my previous post in this thread.

i had this problem 2 days ago. i had old vps 2 days before i realise that i didint have seen those avast update pop ups in some time.
also nothing had changed two days in C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\defs

it just keep saying "unknown error" when i tried to manually update it.

i managed to fix it by:

1.downloaded manual update and save it to desktop

(manual update in normal mode worked, but it didint change those vps numbers you can see in update screen or when you put mouse over avast icon in low right corner, and manual update still failed at "unknown error")

2.repaired avast!, wait 5 min and close the computer

3.launch computer is safemode

4.run manual update and rebooted to normal mode

5.now when i tried to update, it say that virus definitions are already up to date

6.couple hours later i saw the update pop up.

i dont know what fixed it, but it is working now.

my avast versio is 2014.9.0.2013 and im using Avast! Internet Security
my avast is using hxxp://x9942723.ivps9x.u.avast.com/ivps9x (i changed tt to xx  making it unclickable)

was there any problems in that server couple days ago?  :)

FYI I have tried 2014 version when it came out, but it borked my computer. I've lost connection to internet and it have shut down in Blue screen of death. So after that I've returned to last version which worked on my pc.

So, what now, gentlemen?
Then you have other problems with your installation of Windows.

Not necessarily. There could be some software conflicts.
Without knowing what other security software the poster has
it's almost impossible to know what did cause the BSOD.
