Which is the best firewall compatible & free?

Windows firewall or NxFilter 1.7.5 (the most recent firewall if I am correct)

Best is a hardware firewall, but if you want a software firewall (as well), I suggest Comodo.

Comodo is compatible with both avast and windows 8(.1)
