Uninstall SNAFU - Avast Free
« on: March 06, 2014, 04:38:29 PM »
Hullo. Would appreciate some help.

Using Revo Uninstaller Pro, I've botched an uninstall of Avast Free (v. 2014.9.0.2013). Am now saddled with a gigantic pile of Avast leftovers that Windows refuses to delete.

From C:\Program Files, a screenshot of the carnage (for viewing, or downloading):

Windows tells me that I need "Administrator permission" to delete the files, which makes no sense, since I am the administrator.

I've also tried right-clicking on the files and choosing: "Take ownership." Nuttin' doin'.

Does someone know of a way to get rid of these files? Would greatly appreciate your help.

Kind thanks.

You can use the avastclear tool http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility never use third party programs to remove security software as you now know ;)

Note that the tool will automatically ask and boot the system to safe mode when you run it, you don't have to boot into it first.

Fantastic. Thank you very much, Craig. Just the ticket!

Two more questions:

1. The AvastClear page says: "Sometimes it's not possible to uninstall avast! the standard way - using the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS in control panel. In this case, you can use our uninstallation utility avastclear."

Does this mean that AvastClear is always the best way to uninstall Avast?  I won't use a third-party uninstaller on Avast again, but is Windows Add/Remove Programs also useless?

2. You say: "Never use third party programs to remove security software as you now know."

I didn't know that, so thanks for the info. Does this apply to all security software, or just to Avast?

My crappy mood has done a one-eighty since this morning, thanks to you. Again, I appreciate your help!

Always try and remove via Add/Remove first then follow with the tool or in case of removal not possible just go straight to running the tool.

Yes it applies to all security software.

Glad your all fixed and running again :)
