Windows Vista Blue screen loop?
« on: March 20, 2014, 12:33:27 AM »
I just upgraded from the trial to the $20 Internet Security version of Avast on my desktop that's running Windows Vista 64 bit. Rebooted as instructed but now my computer doesn't load past the loading bar before restarting over again. I can't run it in safe mode either to try and remove Avast as it hangs on one of the drivers related to Avast before also restarting. I do have a USB drive and am using my roommate's laptop so I can get a portable fix if necessary.

Read this thread............yes, I know it is virus removal thread.....but go down to section "if you cannot open your computer" and follow the instructions (attached too) to post a FRST log to this thread. http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0
Once one of the experts reads this thread they will want to see the FRST log.

Any chance you had prior A/V software on your machine ?
Did you uninstall prior to installing Avast ?

Just the trial version of Avast, which had expired some years back. I didn't uninstall it prior to installing the Internet Security though. Gonna run a scan shortly.

Another thread to read...look at Beretgascon's post/reply #30: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=140187.30
Do you have a Vista Repair CD ?

I also PMed Essexboy for you......his is UK time so will be several hours before he wakes to see thread.

I HIGHLY recommend waiting for him.......if you are like me you can get eager to try something....could make it MUCH worse.
Patience......if you are itching to do something then do a search on the Forum for aswVmm.sys and aswRvrt.sys or "won't boot" or BSOD. Do some reading......may allow you better dialogue with Essexboy and some insights into your PC.....not sure how techy you are.

Download the following programme and save it to a USB drive
 Farbar Recovery Scan Tool
Select the correct version for your system either 32 or 64bit

Then  start the computer with the CD

When you reboot you will  see this.
 Click repair my computer

Select your operating system

Select Command prompt

Insert the USB with FRST on it

At the command prompt type the following  :

notepad and press Enter
The notepad opens. Under File menu select Open
Select "Computer" and find your flash drive letter and close the notepad.
In the command window type e:\frst64.exe (or FRST.exe for 32bit) and press Enter
Note: Replace letter e with the drive letter of your flash drive.
The tool will start to run.
When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.

Press Scan button.
It will make a log (FRST.txt) on the flash drive. Please copy and paste it to your reply.

Using the install cd, when it asks me to select the operating system to repair there's nothing there. The box is blank.

OK that does not sound promising we may be looking at a hard drive failure or corruption

Let us see if we can access it from OTLPE

Download Peazip to the desktop
Run and install the programme
As it installs this page will show, deselect the AVG ticks
Press decline and it will then install cleanly

Download the following files to the desktop .. Right click the links and select save as...then select desktop

Rufus

OTLPE_standard

Right click OTLPE on your desktop and select  ..Open as archive

Select OTLPE standard

Click Extract, ensure that desktop is selected

Insert the USB stick Then run Rufus

Select the ISO file on the desktop via the ISO icon.

Press Start Burn

Once the USB has burnt then

  • Download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to the flash drive.

    • Reboot your system using the boot USB you just created.
Note : If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from USB follow the steps here
  • As the  Programme needs to detect your hardware and load the operating system, I would recommend a nice cup of tea whilst it loads  :)
  • Your system should now display a Reatogo desktop.
  • Locate the flash drive and run FSRT
  • The tool will start to run.

  • When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press Scan button.
  • It will make a log (FRST.txt) on the flash drive. Please copy and paste it to your reply.

Run Listparts and press Fix
Once it has completed then run listparts scan again and post the log
