Software Updater Stuck
« on: March 21, 2014, 06:19:38 AM »
Well, not the whole thing, just one program it monitors.  Specifically Adobe Reader.

For a couple of updates to the Avast program now, the software updater for Adobe Reader has been saying "Preparing".  I can't get it to do anything else.  I've tried ignoring, actually updating Reader once, but nothing I've tried gets it off "Preparing".  All the others work properly, but this one is stuck.  Thing is, if I update Adobe Reader, it picks up on that, and shows me the right version I have installed, but still shows preparing, even if current version is current!

I'm using Avast Internet Security v2014.9.0.2013 on Win 8.1/64bit

Now I know there's a minor update to Avast pending (to .2016), but I've already done a couple of those since this has been stuck, so I don't expect that will change anything.

Anyone have any ideas how to get this unstuck and properly report the status?

I highly recommend that you upgrade your AIS to .2016.

1) Uninstall Avast via add/remove and follow their instructions.
2) Use Avast Uninstall Utility and run it in safe mode. Make sure you select Avast Free/Internet/Pro... when u start Avast Uninstall Uitility and follow their instructions.
3) Run Avast Cleanup Tool in normal mode and restart manually. Avast Cleanup Tool is found here http://rejzor.wordpress.com/avast-cleanup-tool/
Note: Scroll down a bit on that link and you will find a zip folder of Avast Cleanup Tool select that and download it.
4) Do a clean installation of AIS

I did go to 2016 after I posted that.   It didn't make a difference.  Seems like a pain to uninstall/reinstall just for that.   It's easier to just hit "ignore updates".

Oh I didn't know. You can do a repair of AIS via Add/remove. Once you done that restart computer manually. It should fix it after that.

Before you retry Avast Software Updater after doing a repair. Just do a manual update of Adobe Reader via it's program updater. Once done that try using Avast Software Updater.

It seems like only a FULL uninstall will fix this, as I went from 2013 to 2016, and it still has the problem.  Likewise a version or two before to 2013, and it's still there.   I doubt a repair will fix it, but I'll try.

Okay try doing a repair first, because it's most reliable fix that can solve problems sometimes. If that doesn't work, do the steps that I mentioned previously.
