I had assumed that opting out of 'community participation' would mean that there would be no submission of stats (that's what the text against the tick box suggests). Is this not the case?

That is what it SHOULD do ( and how it used to be ) . However no matter what you set, how many avast connection/features/community settings you set to "OFF" , avast is sending stats upon update.

( Avast is also calling Google Analytics when you run a scan )

Avast no longer seem to respect users privacy.

Avast no longer seem to respect users privacy.
Simply not true.

Nearly every software product you use collects information about you. Search engines, games, everything. We do the same. This allows us to provide better products and services for you. But we promise that we will never publish or share any of your personally identifiable information, nor allow anyone else to use it to contact you for marketing purposes without your consent. We promise to respect your privacy and keep your information private. However we do use the information we collect to help us understand new and interesting trends. Before we use the information, we remove anything and everything that identifies you personally. We then combine this data with information from millions of other users. This generic information may be shared with third parties. These third parties may use the de-personalized and aggregated information to provide business intelligence services to their customers. But it cannot be used to identify or target you personally.

If after installing this product, you’d prefer not to participate in this generic data gathering, you can opt-out in your avast! Account.

None information could identify you. Your privacy is completely guaranted.

Tech, with respect this is garbage.   If a user elects to NOT allow the sending of data, Avast should respect that , not carry on taking stats from their system.

1. I've complete my early post. Use your avast account to do that (at least, it will be there in next version that I'm translating).
2. Garbage? If you do not trust avast!, better to move on. You need to trust your security provider.

Almost all Antivirus softwares are collecting Data otherwise they could not provide such a good protection. :)

They need Cloud statistics and stuff like this.

The community option has always been for submitting file samples. The updater has always sent some brief info about its operations during the update and nothing has changed about it (but I believe the word "Statistics" is kinda unfortunate, as it doesn't contain the kind of information mentioned below - like malware detected, number of files scanned, number of infected URLs visited etc.). It's basically the info about the versions (avast! and its modules, virus definitions, OS, ...).
