Maybe I could uninstall the driver which the update was for and the software would find it as a missing driver? Or use the 'Restore' facility somehow?

You can access it by clicking on the "Restore" button in the top dashboard of the application. Select only the cardreader  from the list of devices and click Restore.
Make sure to restart your computer. Let me know if this works.

If for some reason it is not listed then use the restore point made by slim drivers when it installed the card reader

Doesn't work. I even tried restoring all of the drivers and when I scanned for updates after, it still said everything was up to date.

I can do a clean install of Windows and update the drivers from SlimDrivers after if it would be easier. There's nothing on this computer that needs backing up or anything.

That would be worth a try and initially do not install the card reader driver but let slimdriver locate it for you

OK, I'll do that tomorrow and let you know what happens as soon as it finishes. Probably won't finish until tomorrow night if I include Windows 8.1.

Reinstalled Windows 8 and the hard disk light has stopped flashing constantly and has returned to normal. However, now I have another problem. Windows won't install Windows 8.1, it downloads it, reaches the end of the installation and then comes up with a blue screen resulting in it restoring Windows 8 and giving an error code. It's done it three times now. I'm going to have to clean install Windows 8 again and go through the whole process, tried everything else I found from googleing. Hopefully, this will resolve the problem and I'll let you know what happens.

You didn't mention them error message ???
Did you update all of the apps and all of the drivers prior to attempting the upgrade to 8.1 ???

Sorry about that. After it restored Windows 8, I logged on and it just said something like "Windows 8.1 could not be installed. We have restored your PC to it's previous version of Windows." It didn't even say it was an error code but this code was after the message: 0xC1900101- 0x40017. I updated Windows 8 using 'Windows Update' prior to trying the 8.1 upgrade but planned to use SlimDrivers when I had completed the upgrade to 8.1. Anyway, when the first installation failed, that was the first thing I did before trying the installation again and it still came up with the same message which is why now I'm going to try a clean install from the Windows 8 disc and then try the 8.1 upgrade again.

Just a quick question about this: if I can't upgrade to 8.1 would it be OK to just run my system on Windows 8 or would it be a security risk due to it not being the latest version?

That error code is a known update problem and it is either caused by old Nvidia graphics drivers or additional USB devices being plugged in during the upgrade (mouse and keyboard are not affected and can remain plugged in ) http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8_1-windows_install/error-0xc1900101-0x40017-when-installing-windows/8c893ae6-0e9b-4b7d-a647-b9065099efd6

Yeah, I saw this when I Googled it. I don't think I need Nvidia graphic drivers because I don't have their graphics card (checked in 'Device Manager'), I've got 'Intel HD Graphics 3000'. I had my mouse and keyboard plugged in, I don't know if maybe this caused the problem because it's a laptop and it already has it's own keyboard and mouse. However, I updated to 8.1 successfully 3 or 4 times in the past with the keyboard and mouse connected.

Now, I've clean installed (deleted partitions) Windows 8 from the disc again, used SlimDrivers to update all my drivers, fully updated Windows 8 and uninstalled all uneccessary Windows apps. Despite doing all of this, Windows still has the '!' on my laptop in the 'Devices and Printers' section of Control Panel and in the Device Manager the same symbol appears on two devices which are both named 'Base System Device' under the 'Other devices' section. I know this means Windows is saying these things need troubleshooting but I've noticed after a previous Windows 8 clean install that troubleshooting these devices in Windows was what started my hard disk light flashing constantly and it never stopped until reinstalling Windows, I don't know if this was just a coincidence. Is there a better way to troubleshoot these devices or is it best to use the Windows troubleshooter?

One more thing, I want to make sure my system is in the best possible state before attempting another Windows 8.1 upgrade so I don't get the error again. Is there anything you can suggest other than the updates I've already made?

Thanks for all your help.

Sure. I've attached 'Devices and Printers' page and Device Manager. Is that all you needed to see?

In the past, Windows has installed a Broadcom Memorary Card Reader after searching online and finding the drivers on the Acer website when I clicked 'Troubleshoot'.

For the moment I would suggest you ignore those two and see if they have any affect on the systems performance

Yeah, it must be the memory card reader which I don't use anyway. I just thought before that it might cause problems if I left it because Windows was telling me it needed troubleshooting and the action centre kept telling me to install it. So is their anything else I need to do in your opinion before attempting to install Windows 8.1?

Nope :) just ensure you have all the relevant updates for windows.  If the system runs smoothly without adding the card reader then it would suggest that there may be a connection problem with that bit of hardware
