100% cpu
« on: March 22, 2014, 06:31:06 PM »
Dear Forum,

I have been using avast anti-virus free for a number of years, but now I have a problem

I am using a netbook, Lenovo, windows 7, Intel celeron cpu1005m, 1.90Ghz, upgraded to 6Gb ram (from 2Gb). I am using the netbook temporarily whilst my laptop is having the battery replaced. I have had to send it away and the shop says it could take a month.

I have just got back from the shop, and I found that the cpu was running at 100%. On investigating the processes I discovered it was the avast service. Then I found that if I switched off the web shield CPU usage was mostly fine - have to not open too many tabs on google chrome.

Before I went to have the ram upgrade the netbook was slow but normal cpu usage.

I am not happy about not having the web shield.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hope you are keeping well,

All the Best,

BillZ

Dear Asyn,

Avast Free anti-virus

Program 2014.9.0.2016

Defs 140322-0

Windows 64 bit

I live in Thailand and I bought the machine with pre-installed software including ESET anti-virus in Thai. I think I have got rid of it all.

Hope you are keeping well,

All the Best,

BillZ

First, be sure to get rid of all remnants of your prior installed AVs.
-> http://www.avast.com/faq.php?article=AVKB11

Then:
1. Download avast! Free Antivirus: http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
2. Follow instructions: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed avast! versions..!!)
3. Reinstall avast! with the downloaded installer from point 1.
4. Reboot.

Thanks Marc and Asyn, it worked.

I deleted ESET via safe mode, I had used the uninstaller but not in safe mode.

I still had a problem with avast, but I had tried uninstalling but not properly.

I uninstalled in safe mode and then reinstalled and it is working fine.

Thanks for all your help.

Hope you are keeping well,

All the Best,

BillZ
