Avast BSOD on Vista, STOP 0x00000007b and aswrvrt.sys
« on: March 23, 2014, 03:40:45 AM »
Hello,

I installed Avast Free today on Windows Vista 32bit and I now receive a STOP 0x00000007b BSOD when I boot.  I cannot enter any of the safe modes or restore last known good configuration.  The last file I see when trying safe mode is aswrvrt.sys.  I ran FRST through the recovery console and I attached the logfile.  I modified my username in the file so as to only display my first name, so if your fix involves anything where the user path needs to be corrected, please let me know.

Thanks!

Do you have a recovery CD ?....in order to get to a Command prompt.

Look at this thread and go down to "If you cannot  Boot the computer".
YES, I know it is a VIRUS removal thread but I have PMed one of the experts for you on helping on these boot/BSOD issues.
He will run some utils, etc. to help but will want to see FRST log.
You need to be able to run Farbar (FRST) and post to this thread.
If you have recocvery CD then you can use it to get to command prompt and run FRST from USB stick.
If don't you will need bootable environment so look at thread on OTLPEnet
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0

Post the FRST log.

Hi initially I will reset the registry back and see if that works, if it fails I will then remove Avast and try again

Download the attached Fixlist.txt to the same location as FRST
Run FRST and press Fix
On completion a log will be generated please post that

Hi Essexboy,

Thank you for your suggestion.  I was able to process your fixlist but unfortunately, I am still having the same problem.  I can't be certain that this is an Avast issue.  Yesterday, I also installed new display drivers after installing Avast.  I ran CCleaner as well but I don't think that could have caused any issues.  What do you think?

I attached the fixlog.

With installing the video drivers it may have caused a conflict, so I will remove Avast to clear that option.

Download the attached Fixlist.txt to the same location as FRST
Run FRST and press Fix
On completion a log will be generated please post that

Moving on... Could you now go to command prompt and type in the following command and then try a reboot

chkdsk c: /r

Another angle is to get the new NVidia drivers uninstalled or rolled back.
Essexboy may be able to do this in FarBar....not sure......I'm by far no expert and don't know extent of what FRST can do.

If not, one option is to use a bootable "environment" like UBUNTU for removal..........or perhaps Essexboy can provide better/simpler one.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD
If you can get to Device Manager maybe you can roll back.
http://www.nvidia.com/object/notebook_driver_instructions.html
If not, then uninstall and let Windows install some base drivers or then get to Safe Mode.
There are a lot of threads (just Google) but here is one example on how-to thru UBUNTU
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/31804/the-10-cleverest-ways-to-use-linux-to-fix-your-windows-pc/

Another is Hiren's: http://www.hirensbootcd.org/
BootCD: http://www.hirensbootcd.org/hbcd-v152/
Perhaps the section/tool on:
Device Driver Tools
◦3DP Chip 12.09

Chkdsk did not find any issues.  If you guys have any suggestions about how I might get rid of the nVidia drivers, that would be greatly appreciated.  However, this isn't the nVidia forum so I don't expect anyone to!  Let me know if you think this is the end of the line and I should just reformat.

I tried a fixlist of my own to target the nVidia issues.  Unfortunately, it did not change the issue at all.  I've attached the fixlog.  Thanks again for the suggestions so far!

Unfortunately none of my tools will look that deeply into the system to safely remove the NVidia drivers

For speed I would recommend a reformat.  Do you want to back up some files ?  If so I can provide a programme that will help with that

I can boot into Ubuntu and copy some files to a flash drive.  Thanks again for the speedy suggestions you gave me!  I commented yesterday that this was the only Vista machine I've never had an issue with.  I spoke too soon.  Oh well, it needed a reformatting anyway!
