I am using Avast Pro V 2014.9.0.2013, and it is updated automatically. I was getting a warning on the first Webpage I visited (see attached). This always happened on the first page whatever it might be, The BBC, Google, Hotmail etc, but not on subsequent pages. I contacted Support and was told:

"You may have malware trying to redirect your browser to another site. In this situation, please perform a thorough clean-up of the system.
First of all, run avast! scans in Windows SAFE MODE:"

The next problem was that I could not get this Win 7 Viao (fully updated) to start in Safe Mode.
With the F8 key I got to the selection screen, chose "Safe Mode with Networking" the next thing was a blue screen which flashed past too quickly to read, then a DOS text screen saying that Windows could not start and offering to Repair it. I went with that, and 20 minutes later the next massage was that Windows could not be repaired, but could be reset using system restore. That ran forever, then Windows re-booted in normal mode, and clearly had not been reset to an earlier restore point. (I had re-arranged, re-sized and changed the spacing of the icons just the last time I used the machine and everything was still the way I'd left it, not reset to the earlier configuration.)

So I tried Safe Made again. Same outcome. Avast Help desk now said:

a) Open avast! user interface and go to Settings > Update. Click the button to update virus definitions.
 b) After definitions are up to date, click OK to exit settings. . .

I can't open Settings, it wants a password. I have the password stored in RoboForm. No good, Avast doesn't accept it. So the next question is how do I get to Settings????

ANY suggestions very much appreciated,

David

If you can't open settings/forgotten avast! password, the only way to get it back to normal is a clean fresh install.

1. Download Avastclear, Rejzors uninstall tool and the appropriate Avast program edition

Note: It's important you used the stub online installer from the one I linked.. NOT the offline one.

Note: You need to be ONLINE during this install (online installer works in all cases whereas offline sometimes doesn't)

Avastclear : http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avastclear.exe
Rejzors Uninstall tool: http://rejzor.wordpress.com/avast-cleanup-tool/

2. Uninstall Avast by control panel  [If you don't have Avast in control Panel go to #4]
3. Uninstall in safe mode using Avastclear.
4. Run Rejzors Uninstall Utility in Normal Mode (removes traces avastclear doesn't) - reboot.
Check : Once uninstalled check in device manager>view>show hidden devices if there is anything related to avast with a yellow triangle.. if so, uninstall it and reboot.
5. Install the version you downloaded.
6. Reboot.

Note : If you have a paid license, install it after the reboot at stage 6.
