Windows won't boot, gets hung up at aswRvrt.sys
« on: April 05, 2014, 02:33:39 AM »
Recently my Windows 7 hasn't been booting. I've tried a few troubleshooting steps such as trying to load the last working configuration and loading in safemode, but each time my computer gets stuck on the "Starting Windows" screen and just stays there until I do a hard shutdown. I don't get any crashes or BSODs, I just get hung up and am forced to shutdown.

When attempting to load safemode, it stops when it gets to loading aswRvrt.sys. After a Google search I came across this thread here:
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=120531.0

So I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask for help.

I got a FRST.txt that I'll attach.

I have Windows 7 x64

Any help would be appreciated.

Download attached fixlist.txt and save it to your USB flashdrive as fixlist.txt

>>  Boot into Recovery Environment

Start FRST in a similar manner to when you ran a scan earlier, but this time when it opens ....
  •     Press the Fix button once and wait.
  •     FRST will process fixlist.txt
  •     When finished, it will produce a log fixlog.txt on your USB flashdrive.
>>  Exit out of Recovery Environment and post me the log please.

Try to boot Windows normally...

Ok, thank you for the replies. I did what you requested and I successfully removed avast from the computer. However, the problem is still persisting although with a different file. "CLASSPNP.sys"

I don't think that this is an avast related issue, so I don't know if you could still provide help... but I'm open to any suggestions.

I'm going to attach the fixlog that you requested.

Let me go into a little more detail about the events leading up to the issue. To start, I believe this may have something to do with nvidia graphics drivers.
-The night prior to the problem I had set my computer to download and install some windows updates. Among the updates was some nividia software. I didn't really look at what it was, I just figured that if it was in the updates window under "important" I might as well grab it.
-After about an hour and a half, the install meter was still hanging at the nvidia update. Since it was really late at night, I clicked the "stop update" and let it stop on it's own. When it finished it asked me to reboot however instead of restarting, I just did a shutdown.
-I woke up in the middle of the night to see the computer was still on. Apparently it attempted to do a reboot on it's own rather than shut down. I turned the monitor on and was frozen on the windows repair screen. Being that it was like 4AM and the computer was frozen, I did a hard shutdown and opted to look at it in the morning.
-The next steps I took are mentioned in my original post.
-After finding it getting stuck on CLASSPNP.sys, I did a google search and found a few people with similar issues. Some needed to switch/format their harddrives, others needed to reset their BIOS settings to default. However some people mentioned links to graphics related occurrences.
-Being that I have an Intel CPU with an onboard GPU, I went into my BIOS and set my primary graphics to my CPU rather than GPU. Unfortunately when booting, I got stuck in the same place (CLASSPNP.sys).
-I reset all my settings back to how they were. I have a feeling that it's not a display issue, but some sort of core driver that is integrated with Windows that is related to nvidia.. so regardless of the display adapter used the issue would still persist.

System specs:
Intel i7-4770K (3.5GHz)
16gb DDR3 RAM
nvidia Geforce 640 x2 (SLI)
Motherboard is ASUS SABERTOOTH Z87

Again, I realize that this has escalated past an avast issue (and likely no longer belongs in this section anymore)... so if no one can help that's fine. But I'll take any suggestions I can get at this point.

Thank you in advance.

Hi,

Let's try few more ideas :)

Open notepad.
  • Click Start
  • Type notepad.exe in the search programs and files box and click Enter.
  • A blank Notepad page should open.
  • Copy/Paste the contents of the code box below into Notepad.
Code: [Select]
cmd: sfc /SCANNOW /OFFBOOTDIR=C:\  /OFFWINDIR=C:\Windows
cmd: bootrec.exe /fixboot
cmd: bootrec.exe /fixmbr
  • Save it to your USB flashdrive as fixlist.txt
>>  Boot into Recovery Environment

Start FRST in a similar manner to when you ran a scan earlier, but this time when it opens ....
  •     Press the Fix button once and wait.
  •     FRST will process fixlist.txt
  •     When finished, it will produce a log fixlog.txt on your USB flashdrive.
>>  Exit out of Recovery Environment and post me the log please.

I think this is related to hardware malfunction. You should take it to the repair shop.
