Obviously Defender is installed as it's part of the OS on win7, aside from Defender being next to useless it does not interfere with avast.

Yeah, I've installed no other AV or protection programs other than Avast and MBAM, which I've had both for years with no problems. I didn't even install ANY programs around the time avast stopped working.

For XP, I believe to have found the cause of this problem, on the page http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=149216.15 . Réponse # 19.
The version 9 cannot be installed (settled) in personal mode.

That works correctly in the installing in  C:\Program Files\Avast Software\Avast

We see this defect in the file
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AVAST Software\Avast\log
Event.log :
23/04/2014   15:09:28   AAVM - initialization error: g_tdi.Initialize failed! (logName: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AVAST Software\Avast\log\nshield.log), 00000000.

Sorry, since your avast isn't working, then what other AV are you using now?

-  the latest version of Avast and that didn't work
-  did a clean install of Avast unsuccessfully
-  are not running any other security programs other than MBAM

I think you're at the point of running an OTL log for someone to review to see if something is wrong with your machine.  We understand your concern with privacy.  I suggest that you follow the directions previously given to you or read or read the 2nd post down in the Virus section of the Forum and private message (PM) your log as an ATTACHMENT to Essexboy.  After running the OTL log, do not make any changes to your machine until he reviews it and gives you further instructions.

I don't think so, I've run MBAM full scans a few times and came back with nothing.
