Which settings did you use?

Quick/Standard/Thorough? And did you enabled Archive scanning?

Well, that means toughest possible scan. Extremely slow.

Use Simple Interface instead to perform On-Demand scans.

Standard sensitivity should do the trick. Using Archive scan enables scanning inside ZIP,RAR,CAB etc archives, but can lenghten whole scan process even more.
Thorough with archives should be used only in cases of heavy system infection, otherwise Standard shield without Archive scanning should be enough.

Well, in fact, on-demmand speed is not the best feature of avast.
It could be normal if you're scanning archive files and have a huge amount of it (with big file sizes).
If the scanning ends well, we couldn't say anything against it, I mean, seems normal (answer for your first question).

Using the "I just right clicked on the partition and hit scan X: " does a scan using ashQuick.exe and this scans every file in the drive/partition, even those that are a low or no risk, so this will obviously take longer.

Your normal scan is selective (you can set the sensitivity), it doesn't scan every file nor archive files if you haven't selected them.
