When I updated an XP SP3 from 2014.9.0.2013 to 2014.9.0.2018 Avast sheilds didn't come on - no antivirus protection. Error message: "AAVM subsystem detected an RPC error"
Avast dates showed I had till Nov 2014, yet 0 days remaining. I tried re-registering twice but no help.
I hadn't added or removed  any other antivirus on this PC..just updated Avast from version to version for several years. Due to this problem, I've installed windows defender so I'm not totally unprotected.   I also have 'on demand' malwarebytes & SuperAntispyware. All 3 play well with Avast on other XP PC's.
I've read several posts about people going thru multiple Avast uninstall and reinstall cycles to solve this problem. I'm not going down that road. I'll try repair strategies & I'll remove and reinstall once if I have reason to believe that will solve the problem. If it doesn't, I'll remove Avast completely and try a different AV.
All suggestions for repair appreciated

Try a repair of avast and let us know if that solved it.

After a safe mode restart, I used the system restore point Avast created when I tried the update from 2013 to 2018 [Thanks for the RP,  Avast]. That got me back to stable 2013 which then updated it's signatures. I won't be going to a newer version until I see a stable version for quite awhile. I reinstalled Windows defender which plays well with avast and runs beside it real time. Will also use cryptprevent,  SuperAntispyware &  Malwarebytes On demand to supplement avast.

There are known issues when updating from version 2013.
I suggest you perform a clean install of the latest version (2014.9.0.2018)

1. Download Avastclear, Rejzors uninstall tool and the appropriate Avast program edition.
Here are the installer links. Note: You need to be ONLINE during this install.

Avastclear : http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avastclear.exe
Rejzors Uninstall tool: http://rejzor.wordpress.com/avast-cleanup-tool/

2. Uninstall Avast by control panel  [If you don't have Avast in control Panel go to #4]
3. Uninstall in Safe Mode using Avastclear.
http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility
4. Run Rejzors Uninstall Utility in Normal Mode (removes traces avastclear doesn't) - reboot.

5. Be Sure Too Check Once Uninstall is Complete:Device Manager>View>Show Hidden Devices
If there is anything related to Avast with a yellow triangle then uninstall it (highlight, right click) and reboot.
6. Install the version you downloaded.
7. Reboot.

Eddy, Thanks for the excellent Uninstall reinstall links and strategy. Since I'm a bit gunshy over 2018, I'll wait a bit before implementing a reinstall...probably till a version is stable for a month or so.
Great advice...I'm sure those googling and searching this board will appreciate it too.

The only thing I (and others) here can do is trying to help  ;)
I'm running the 2018 version on a XP SP3 system without any problem.
Ofcourse that doesn't mean you can't have a problem after performing the clean install.
Each system is different and 100% success can never be given.
There is a thread about the 2018 version where its release was announced and with posts on how the people are experiencing it.
You may want to read that one.
