It's interesting as it has been stated many times before. Folks get overly concerned and bent out of shape if a VPS update doesn't arrive everyday (or a couple of days) when the fact is the "streaming updates" are the crucial front line security updates that are continuously streaming so I'm not sure what about this process is not understandable.
As a matter of fact, it has been asked "are the VPS updates even necessary"?

I guess that Avast could muddle thru with possibly thousands of streaming updates filling the hard drive without VPS updates.  But I think the answer to "Are the VPS updates even necessary?' is and obvious YES.  I understand the process, just pointing out that the update server didn't deliver a published VPS.  It's done it before and probably will again.  If the missing VPS was pulled by Avast, then it's not an issue.  Otherwise, it's something that needs looking at by those that administer the servers.

Agreed, I was just pointing out that these delays have been happening (often on weekends) since forever and that the streaming updates are what's important IF folks are concerned about risk of virus.

A VPS update didn't arrive at the OP's computer in six days, was it acceptable?

And again, no updates today. Stuck with 140430-2.

Something's definitely wrong with the update servers...

On avast's defense, though, I must say that there haven't been any new updates today, so it seems it's all good for now. Let's wait until tomorrow and see if it updates normally.

Someone reported the problems to avast! that fixed them accordingly.
No one reported the problems, but avast! spotted and fixed them.

Which one is correct?

This is what's important:

What you're referring to only consolidates the ongoing streaming updates.

What do you mean by "consolidates"? Combines them into a single version?

Correct.

The two or three times (sometime four) vps updates place all streaming updates into one package, plus also they include any fixes or errors to any streaming updates or prior vps versions.

Streaming updates now provide much more current malware protection, but the consolidation of these updates still take place because not everyone has their systems connected to the Internet 24/7.  It allows these users to catch up on the missed streaming updates that were issued when they were not online.

If the system is connected for an hour daily on average, will automatic updates be far more important than streaming updates?

There is no "more important". Streaming delivers updates as soon as available provided you're on line.
VPS delivers a consolidation of all of the streaming updates since the last VPS update.
By being on line constantly, you're fed protection as soon as it's available.
Only going on line occasionally will most likely deliver your updated protection through a VPS update and, depnding
on how long you remain on line, you may also receive some streaming updates.
As you can see, there are quite a few streaming updates sent:

I don't think so, just that the time zones will differ and that could well make a difference - USA Vs Asian time zones are going to give anomalies.

I presume the that the check of numbers received in the last 24 hours is working of your computer system time.

EDIT: And me in the middle United Kingdom time zone.

You also stated that you're on line only for an hour per day. That will also make a difference
as I explained in my reply to your question. :)
