Avast Firewall cannot turn on

I keep getting this icon on the bottom of my tray that says Avast Firewall is not on. When I go to turn it on it can't. What is going on here?

Reluctant to renew my subscription if this is not fixed.

Repair avast!:
1. Control Panel -> Add/Remove programs -> avast!
2. Click on 'Repair'.
3. Follow instructions.
4. Reboot.
