Hi all,

Sorry, I have read everything possible before posting a message, but it looks like every solution has to be personalised and I hope someone can give me a hand with this...

In the last two weeks, Avast! has been popping up small notification windows about Web Shield blocking harmful webpages (theadclick.com) and Mail Shield preventing from sending hundreds of emails with strange subjects (?????). I am attaching screen captures of the last three pop ups so you can have a look. I have downloaded Malwarebytes, TDSKiller and Combofix among others I found in most of the forums with similar problems, but no luck.

Any suggestions? Any help really appreciated!

Cheers.

You have Malware thats trying to send malicious E-Mails.

Please follow these steps and attach logs from MBAM, OTL and aswMBR(Not Win 8 and newer): http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0

Hi,

Do you know diferences betwen Malwarebytes and TDSSKiller? Do you know what is ComboFix?

People spend ~6 months in training just to know how to use CF, what CF can and what it can't do, how to read CF logs and how to write CFScripts...

Just to add this link to: The words from sUBs himself:

Also post here ComboFix's addition log:

Hi to all.

Many thanks for your replies. Pondus, Magna86, I am sorry. I was just trying to solve it myself reading forums and posts regarding similar problems before posting questions as I have always thought it is good practice. I didn't know CF was so serious. I know I am not an expert, that's why I ended up asking here!

Following your instructions, I am attaching reports for Malware Bytes, OTL and aswMBR as suggested. I currently do not have ComboFix on my computer, should I download it and run it again?

Thanks for your time!

1 word: NO!

Unless Magna86 tells you too, don't run Combofix!!!!!!!!!

Hi jlrq,

Do you have this log here?
C:\Qoobox\ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt

Posted logs does not show the malware presence or its activity. But we will go to an extra check in Step 2.
Step1 will just tell the tool to remove some leftovers and empty all temp folders.

Let's start ...

=> Step#1

Re-run OTL.exe.

  • Copy and paste the following text written inside of the quote box into the Custom Scans/Fixes box.

Code: [Select]
:OTL
O3:[b]64bit:[/b] - HKLM\..\Toolbar: (no name) - {CC1A175A-E45B-41ED-A30C-C9B1D7A0C02F} - No CLSID value found.
O3 - HKU\S-1-5-21-997677912-1704848209-1686425977-1000\..\Toolbar\WebBrowser: (no name) - {2318C2B1-4965-11D4-9B18-009027A5CD4F} - No CLSID value found.
@Alternate Data Stream - 1215 bytes -> C:\Users\joseMAC\AppData\Local\Temp:EPCsfp8pMIKV56wnm80e
:FILES
C:\Windows\SysNative\*.tmp
:COMMANDS
[EMPTYTEMP]
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top.
  • Let the program run unhindered; it will reboot the system when it is done and open notepad with logreport. Attach here that logreport.
If the log doesn't appear, it can be found here:

c:\_OTL\MovedFiles\mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log

---   ---   ---   ---   ---   ---   ---   ---   ---   ---   ---   ---

=> Step#1

Re-run OTL by double click on the icon...
  •   Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Click on None button.
    'None' button shall be changed to 'Standard' button, that's Ok

  • Paste this into Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom

    Code: [Select]
    /md5start
    raspppoe.*
    /md5stop
    • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.

      • When the scan completes, it will open notepad with fresh OTL logreprot. OTL.Txt

      • Please attach it in this thread.

Hi magna86,

I am sorry, I don't have the CF log nor the C:\Qoobox directory. I am attaching both OTL logs for steps 1 and 2 (while popping the same avast! windows non-stop...)

Thanks again!

Hi jlrq,

Ok, here is the things. Detected file is related to raspppoe.sys (RAS PPPoE mini-port/call-manager driver) from Microsoft Corporation. In other words, the detection is false.

Although the report does not show malware on system, these diagnostic tools recording only a system, certain settings and browser, all places where malware can load itself or settings it can configure in its favor.
Which mail messenger you are using? It is possible you have a problem with spam and I can't tell you from here. I would reset all browser back to defaults, no data lost. Follow this link below and preform the steps:
http://en.kioskea.net/faq/6361-reset-your-browser-restore-your-browser-to-default-settings

We have one more problem. Since you have been deploy ComboFix on it's own and there is no logs, we need to get these logs one way or anather. As you can find main logs nor Quobox folder, that may means you have been uninstall the tool apon his use. Therefore, you shall need to run ComboFix again but following these instruction:

1. Please download ComboFix by sUBs () from here and save it to your Desktop.
If you are unsure how ComboFix works, read this guide.

--------------------------------------------------------------------
2. Temporarily disable your AntiVirus program, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may interfere with Combofix.
If you are unsure how to do this please read this or this Instruction.

Instructions how to disable avast:
• Right click on the avast! system tray icon () in the lower right corner of the screen and scroll up to avast! shield controls;
• In the menu that appears, choose Disable Permanently. When you are prompted to turn off security, click Yes.

Note:  Do not forget to turn back on this option after the cleaning by choosing avast! shield controls > Enable all shield options.

--------------------------------------------------------------------
3. Run ComboFix. Then, on disclaimer window, click I Agree! button.

- ComboFix will check if there is a newer version of ComboFix available.
Click Yes if prompted to download.

-If Recovery Console is not installed, ComboFix will offer download & installation.
Click Yes to allow ComboFix to install Recovery Console.
- ComboFix will scan your computer in stages, total of 50 stages.
Do not mouse-click around while ComboFix is running.
- If malware is detected, ComboFix will begin with its removal, and may need to restart Windows.
Note:If you see a message like "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion" just restart your computer.

--------------------------------------------------------------------
4. When the tool is finished, it will produce a log report for you. (typical location: C:\ComboFix.txt)
=> Attach log report (ComboFix.txt) back to topic.

ComboFix shall also create addition log (typical location: C:\Qoobox\ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt)
=> Please attach that report (ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt) as well.

Hi magna86,

I was aware that detected file was related to the PPPoE miniport but the messages related to the outgoing email were annoying me (am I being an active spammer??!!!). I use Outlook (but outgoing email threats are not related with Outlook being open or closed) and have reset Chrome which is the browser I use as you suggested.

I have downloaded, installed and ran Combo Fix as instructed and am attaching the logs for you.

Thanks!

No, but you are probably flaged by entering the you mail adress on some unsecured site or something like that. For your problem you need to research by yourself, to see what make avast to flag ...etc.

The good thing would be to install the good Firewall (with HIPS). for example Comodo and to carefully follow all messeges and open ports until examining them all or confirmed the problem itself.

As I do not see the problem and CF hasn't done any fixes, we can remove used tools. I'll give you small tool named as 'DelFix'. That would be the Step#1. This little tool shall remove all used tools here (including ComboFix and all his related files and folder).

When you remove used tools I would like to preform the deep re-check if you will from the beginning, just in case. That would be the Step#2.
Please note, I think we won't find active malware. Problem might be solved with properly configured firewall or changing the e-mail address. So, Step #2 is your choice, also known that this two tool are the best in the diagnostic field.

Step#1

=> Please download DelFix by Xplode to your Desktop.

Run the tool and check the following boxes below;
Remove disinfection tools
Create registry backup
Purge System Restore

Click Run button and wait a few seconds for the programme completes his work.
At this point all the tools we used here should be gone. Tool will create an report for you (C:\DelFix.txt)

The tool will also record healthy state of registry and make a backup using ERUNT program in %windir%\ERUNT\DelFix
Tool deletes old system restore points and create a fresh system restore point after cleaning.

---      ---     ---      ---     ---      ---

Step#2

==>Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool () by Farbar and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatibale with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them.
Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.

  • Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press Scan button.
  • It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach it to your reply.
  • The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply.
.

.

.

==> Please download GMER, AntiRootkit tool from the link below and save it to your Desktop:

Gmer download link
Note: file will be random named

Double-clicking to run GMER.
  • Wait for initial scan to finish - if there is any query, click No;
  • Click Scan button and wait until the full scan is complete;
  • Click Save ... - save the report to the Desktop (named Gmer1 );

  • Right-click wherever in the GMER's window and select Options > 3rd party - click the Scan button;
  • Please wait until the full scan is complete;
  • Click Save ... button and save report to Desktop (named Gmer2 );
    note: time scan for Gmer2 log may take some time

  • Click the >>> and select Autostart card;
  • After quick scan, click Copy button;
  • Open notepad and Paste text. Save report to the Desktop (named Gmer3 )
> Attach here all Gmer logreports. (Gmer1; Gmer2 and Gmer3)

Thanks magna86,

I am away for a few hours but as soon as I return home will run all tools you mention and attach logs. This is a bit frustrating as I use to be very careful with my pc and have read a lot before asking you guys and yes, same results... strange.

Anyway, I'll get back to you later with the logs. Again, thanks a lot.

Hi again magna86,

I am attaching the logs from all tools you suggested. Maybe it's not relevant, but a lot of PPPoE and Outlook lines have been popping up in the Gmer window while analising...

Now it's more relaxed, but again, for 5 minutes Avast! windows have been continuously emerging from the taskbar telling me it is deleting outgoing emails with different strange subjects... arrrjjjj!!! Now it has stopoped for around 10 minutes... weird!

Thnx!
