You are using a 1 year(!) old version.
You should remove that version and install the latest which is 2014.9.0.2018.

The latest avast version is 9.0.2018, is there any reason to update to an old version ?

Direct download location - http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe.

I used PayPal late last night with no problem using the latest avast version - I don't use the new Avast Online Security (AOS) add-on in Firefox.

I had the same problem today while running the most current version of Avast.  Had to disable Avast to complete my purchase.

Confirmed FP Here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=4.0
I just signed in to PayPal without any problems ???

Just signing in might not be enough to trigger it. When making a purchase using PayPal there has to be something to handle the transaction from and back to the merchants store. That would be the area possibly at risk, though as I said I made a purchase using PayPal late last night.

@ johnchisholm
Whilst I don't use the Avast Online Security (AOS) add-on in firefox; johnchisholm try disabling the AOS add-on in your browser and see if that works - if not then try the just disabling the Web Shield.

You said avast is blocking, do you actually mean alerting on it (as some others are reporting alerts) ?

No problems using Paypal last nite.  They're one of the few sites using 2FA which offer an alternative method to SMS for the one-time code if you don't have a mobile device -- you enter your landline number which they call immediately with a recorded message giving the code (also displayed on-screen) which you then "dial" into your phone.  Works quite smoothly.
