Today at work we installed Avast to try and solve an intermittent issue I have had copying to our Network (long and irrelevant story) However as soon as I started IE11 to get to my work emails (which are on Outlook Web Access) and my private emails, (Outlook.co.uk emails) I discovered problems.

Microsoft Web Access did not display correctly and my Hotmail account will only show me the list of emails but cannot open any of them.

I disabled the Avast Online Security addon and as if by magic, both problems went away.

I also found that IE crashed a lot until I disabled AOS.
This is not much of an antivirus program if I have to disable it to get at my emails!!!
Is there a setting that I can alter so that I can use the online security and yet still read my emails?

Is/was there another av on the system?
If so, it has to be removed prior to installing avast.

If there wasn't/is another av on the system:
First try a repair to see if it solves the problem(s).
Control panel > software > avast > add/remove > choose repair.

If that fails:
1. Download Avastclear, Rejzors uninstall tool and the appropriate Avast program edition.
Here are the installer links. Note: You need to be ONLINE during this install.

Avastclear : http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avastclear.exe
Rejzors Uninstall tool: http://rejzor.wordpress.com/avast-cleanup-tool/

2. Uninstall Avast by control panel  [If you don't have Avast in control Panel go to #4]
3. Uninstall in Safe Mode using Avastclear.

4. Run Rejzors Uninstall Utility in Normal Mode (removes traces avastclear doesn't) - reboot.

5. Be Sure Too Check Once Uninstall is Complete:Device Manager>View>Show Hidden Devices
If there is anything related to Avast with a yellow triangle then uninstall it (highlight, right click) and reboot.
6. Install the version you downloaded.
7. Reboot.

We installed it from your website so I assume that it's the most up-to-date version. It's 2014.9.0.2013
I'm on Win7 pro 64bit and the browser is IE11.

Our IT guy has already had a go with your suggestions. I don't know what exactly he did until he comes in and I can ask, but it made no difference. At this rate, I doubt we'll be registering g it. We're in the 30day trial period of the free version. The person in FB said to update it on the 18th, but I can find nothing in the program that has an 'update now' button on it, and I am not allowed to uninstall, download, and reinstall myself, on a work computer.

The point here is that this product apparently does not work 'straight out the box'. I should not have to disable the Online component to be able to read my emails.

edit - I just found the Updater in settings at last. So am running that.
Edit again - OK no I'm not because the updater is reporting 'host unreachable'.

edit - I ran a repair as suggested. Now Avast Online Security doesn't show in the browser's list of add-ons at all. Is that how it SHOULD be?

I would disable AOS......there are several items within Avast 9 that just aren't IHMO at peak levels......AOS has been one of them.
Removing or Disabling the Add-In does not change your protection.....Avast 9 web shield still there.

FYI, if you go back and do a Change of the installation or Custom Install AOS = Browser Protection in the list....see attached.
You can see from this for "me" I have none of the tools installed, only the A/V protection.

Avast 2014.9.0.2016 has been released and it seem the problems are solved in that version.
I'm not using IE, Hotmail and Outlook so I can't test it myself, but I suggest you (or the IT guy) perform a clean installation of that one.

ps:
avast is not free to be used in a office/business environment.

I've just installed version .2018 which I presume is more recent than 2016 and got the same problem.  So it would appear the issue has not been fixed as claimed. Disabling the Add-on in the browser rectifies the issue but it shouldn't happen in the first place.  Running Win 8.1 IE11.

The free version is for private use only.
Since you are in a business environment you are not allowed to use it there.
You need a version of avast! Endpoint Protection.
