I have added their file paths to the exclusions in settings and that didn't work.

The error is:

The iPod update software server could not be contacted
Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, or try again later.

I'm running windows xp.

Thanks in advance, any thoughts appreciated   :-*

Just reread your questions...just installed the purchased avast on Sunday and was using the trial version for 30 days prior.

First, be sure to get rid of all remnants of your prior installed AV(s).
-> http://www.avast.com/faq.php?article=AVKB11

Then:
1. Download avast! Internet Security: http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_internet_security_setup.exe
2. Follow instructions: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed avast! versions..!!)
3. Reinstall avast! with the downloaded installer from point 1.
4. Reboot.

PS: You should update your XP to SP3..!!

Thank you for advice....will attempt tonight or tomorrow!

As for SP 3 I have tried many, many time to update this laptop and I always hit a roadblock...now that I think about it maybe malware was preventing update hmmmmmmm.....I'm going to try again right now!  ( I just had an AHA moment and want to shout out.....ARRGGHH YOU SCURVY DOGS, PREPARE TO BE BOARDED or something along those lines, but I'm guessing that is either now trite or overly used so hence the parenthesis,  but, ANYWAY).........now that microsoft isn't supporting xp I will eventually purchase a new computer, but we really don't need to "upgrade" as yet ya know?:)  That's why I installed avast so we would at least have current protection and can limp along....don't do much on laptop these days:)

I will follow your instructions and  report results, thank you for taking time to respond:)

Regards,
Leesa
