Test SMS to Friend Doesn't Work

Hi,

I just installed Avast Anti-Theft using Advanced Installation Mode on my Nexus 4.  I set my wife's cell phone, an iPhone, as the only friend phone number, and then tested sending an SMS to her.  She never received the SMS.  I tried all the formats I could think of: 617-413-9999, 1-617-413-9999, 001-617-413-9999, +617-413-9999, and +1-617-413-9999 (not the real number; "-" not entered).  SMS's sent from my SMS app work fine. 

Any ideas on how to make this work?

Anyone have an idea on this as it's Exactly the same problem I'm having. I've put my number in my self, I've tried going in through the phone book and adding my number as I'm programming this on my friend's phone. the add by phonebook option tells me it's the wrong format, no sms is ever received and it gets stuck in a loop doing nothing apparently. I've tried using country codes and am about ready to just find an American company and pay what I have to to get this done and over with. If this system can't work or be easily explained, then it's not for her.
