Avast Free 2014.9.0.2018 Eating up CPU
« on: May 23, 2014, 03:49:29 PM »
I updated my Avast earlier this week, but was bad and didn't restart until last night. When my computer reloaded, I was met with 99% CPU usage caused by Avast.
I couldn't open Chrome or Firefox, as neither would allow me to connect to the web. Though Trillian was connected fine.
Disabling the shields was the only way I was able to connect to my web browser at all. It also dropped the CPU usage to 0%

Thoughts? Tips? Tricks? Help?

Malware Bytes
Sypbot Search & Destroy
Advance System Care (though I use that mostly for file cleanup, not for antivirus)

I left MB to run when I left the house this morning. I will get a log for you when I get home later. It is my home PC with the problem and I am at work.

Though I think that IObit has stopped stealing off MBAM now.

Though I think that IObit has stopped stealing off MBAM now.
Doesn't change the fact that they still did it, distrustful company ethics.

Wouldn't touch any IObit software.   :o

Please refrain from scolding me based on what I have installed. My computer was built for me by my brother, and he loaded the programs mentioned before on it. (so scold him! lol)
I will likely uninstall Spybot since it is not needed, though.

I am not a technogeek, but I can handle a computer decently well. When I tried to run OTL for a log, it locked up when scanning FireFox settings. Sat that way for 5 minutes before I gave it up as a no go.

The problem is DEFINITELY something in the shields as disabling them allows me access to internet, etc. Now I can't even get onto Trillian or Thunderbird without the shields disabled. I do not run a firewall at all, unless there is one built into my modem, which is entirely possible.

Another odd note, my laptop also has Avast on it (under the same email registration) and it hasn't forced me to update to 2014.9.0.2018 yet, where my PC made me.

Same issue here and there's no other security program running. CPU usage  spikes from 0 to 25-50 or even higher and doesn't go lower .Only solution was to disable and enable shields again. Reinstall did nothing too. Win7/64b .

There are many threads on CPU & Memory high usage......in past suggestions to add some lines of code to WebShield.ini

However, before I'd do that I'd do a clean uninstall and re-install.
It does not take that long and you'd be surprised how many things this seems to solve in the Forum posts.
