I just updated avast! Free to the latest version: 2014.9.0.2020
...
Chrome is my default browser and Google is my default search engine.
I was told this problem was corrected. <$1alt="" title="" onresizestart="return false;" id="smiley__$2" style="padding: 0 3px 0 3px;" />
Bob, I suggest to post this in the beta section.
Why ??? this shows that the problem is still around even in the latest release.

As 9.0.2020 is a RC, it might get more attention from the devs there.

@Asyn,
It's already receiving lots of attention at:
https://feedback.avast.com/responses/removal-of-google-search-protector
I'm not really looking for attention. Just a simple resolution. :)

Finally after weeks of searching and not finding any help online I've been able figure out where the problem was.

Avast had changed the coding in a file that was affecting the reloading of Firefox. There is a file called "sessionstore" its a Java Script (js) file. Along with "sessionstore.bak"

Located:

C:\Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\

Subfolders for me were named gxmb0960.default & m7ryhpl1.default

the js file and .bak file were located in both. I deleated both and problem solved

i hope this helps to those that need it

Avast, you can shove it up your @$$. since corporation are people and you love sh--ting all over people you must have one massive a--ho-e.

If avast would just listen to every one asking for help this would have been resolved months ago

On my system, I only found the .bak file which I've removed.
Since I've also not had any of the problems for some time, I think it
was probably the sessionstore file causing the problem.
That's only a guess on my part.

By default, the Firefox sessionstore files are excluded from scanning on writes.

Ok I made an account just for this. I installed a different speed dial app to open when I open a new tab. However, when typing into the main hppt: search bar it was still Yahoo, so if you right click on the toolbar (where depends on your computer)> customize> insert search bar> click icon in small search bar> scroll down to google> right click to remove small search bar. This will make the main hppt: search bar google as well.

Hope that makes sense, but I don't know how to take screen shots on my computer.

So i have the Free version and it keeps changing my browsers search engine to Yahoo (Avast), or is it (Avast) Yahoo ... one or the other.  Anyway I do not want this, I prefer Google and I'd like it to stay with Google.

How do I stop Avast from switching my search engine please?

Is there a clear solution to this yet?  I've read all the post here but doesn't look like there is a definite solution.  I'm hesitant to try one of the suggested solutions since I'm not an expert in these stuff and I don't want to mess it even more. Been looking all over the internet for solutions and ended up here thinking that there must be a solution in Avasts forum but so far I'm disappointed.

Yes, there is.
Don't use the browser cleanup tool.

If the tool tells you to choose Yahoo or Bing, don't use the tool. Simply close it.
It was supposed to be fixed. I haven't run into the forced Yahoo change lately.

Hello all,
I too had this problem and yes I have solved it.
on google go to settings and on the section where it says "on Start up" choose  "open new tab page" this sets it back to only opening to google page.

you can choose the third option in the list and put in the url you want it to open to.

it has worked for me and stopped it reverting back to yahoo

Unfortunately, that isn't solving it but correcting what should never have happened in the first place.  :o

This just started happening to me lately. I have been searching for a solution for a week, and finally found the cause was in my Avast.

Reading earlier posts here, I went to Avast 2015: Changing, adding, or removing individual program components and features in setup configuration of Avast Antivirus at http://www.avast.com/faq.php?article=AVKB96#artTitle  There I read...

First access the Avast Setup Wizard via your Contol Panel. If you do not know how to do this, please read the following article:

Accessing the Avast Setup Wizard via your Windows Control Panel
Which took me to a dead link.  I did figure it out in Windows Programs tho.

I removed Browser Cleanup but when I rebooted my computer and open Firefox, the Yahoo search problem is still there.

Now what...??

Go to your browser settings and change the default search provider manually.
Removing the Browser Cleanup tool only prevents it from doing it again. It doesn't restore what's already happened.
