Is there a way to force Avast into a full English mode?
« on: June 20, 2014, 10:33:46 PM »
Hello,
I'm having a bit of a problem with Avast automatically assuming I want to use the language of my region for the program which I seriously do not want.
I have changed the program language into English in the configurations but this seems to only affect the configurations menu and the main status window.
Every other window as well as all the messages the program gives are still shown in my local language, Finnish, which is not wanted.
Finnish is a language that should never, NEVER be used for anything technical.
None of the notification messages or such make any sense because our language is one of the worst for these kind of things, so I would really REALLY like to have the whole program running in English.

Is it possible to do this in any way? Is there a hidden configuration file somewhere? Can I delete the Finnish localization files somewhere?
Any help is appreciated.

EDIT:
I would also want to note that I actually unselected any other languages even from being installed during the setup.
Yet for some reason they are installed? If I look at the uninstaller's "Change" options it also shows that no other languages than English should be installed, yet the program keeps showing me messages in Finnish and if I look at the Avast folder on the disk there is a locales folder that seems to have all languages there, even though they're not supposed to be there.
I also tried deleting the Finnish locale file from there, however Avast seems to be blocking this deletion as well as blocking itself from being shut down.. so I assume there is no way past this other than uninstalling Avast?

You need to disable avast!'s self-defense module (in Troubleshooting). After that you should be able to delete the local folder. BTW, I also have this folder (with many pak  files around 4 KB large) and I don't think that it is the cause of your problems. Reinstalling seem to be the best choice, I guess.
I'm not sure if this could related to your system setting or not. You should check this.
Sorry, I have never use local language, so others may have better solution.

Welcome to the forum. :)
The repair function also allows you the option to make changes.
Go to Control panel, choose the add/remove (programs and Features) function
select avast! then repair on the next screen, you'll be able to select the changes you want to make.
In your case, select English for your language.

Doing this does nothing, and in the "Change" menu of the uninstaller only English is selected.

After a bit of testing I found the cause of the split language, it seems for some unknown reason Avast is determining the language of the pop-ups and such from the date and time format of my Windows.
If I change the time format to English US, the pop-ups Avast uses change too.

This is something you really should fix.. if I have not installed any other language packs then the program really should not use them.
Let alone pick the language from the time format used if everything else on my system is set to English.
