Avast Free program update
« on: July 07, 2014, 10:26:59 AM »
I am running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit with the latest Avast Free.
I have set up Avast to auto update both virus definitions and the program.
The virus definitions update regularly automatically. However, the program does NOT update automatically. Manual update is no problem.
What setting am I missing?
Thanks

Hi Frank98 You have set Avast to auto update the program and it doesn't update automatically! That's is normal. It just takes time for update to reach to the server to come to your region (something along those lines.... tech stuffs). If Avast server distributes the update to all areas at ones it will cause the server to run slow and cause problems.

Just to make sure that you ticked avast to update it's program automatically, check the following below:

1) Open up Avast GUI and click on settings.
2) Tabs on the left hand side, click update.
3) Under program heading, click settings and make sure you select "automatic update", not "ask when an update is available" and not "manual update".

If you have already selected "automatic update" that's fine. It just that it takes a week or so... that all depends.

Yes, those are the settings I have.
My wife's computer, sitting next to mine updated, and a couple of days later, mine still didn't.
Maybe I need to wait longer. I have now updated manually so need to wait for the next update.
I'll wait longer.
Thanks for the help.

Your welcome. It's all up to the user if they want to wait for Avast to update it's program or not some people they just manually update it without having to wait for it to update itself.

Glad to helped you. Coming to the forum also lets you know if Avast released a final version of a new avast program or not without having for you to check it via Avast GUI update tabs.

Have a nice day  :)

There's nothing wrong with wanting "set it and forget it" functionality, but...

Some might say it's a good idea to use the "Ask when an update is available" setting anyway, then do a bit of research before just going ahead once it notifies you.

Imagine, for example, that you were to see a new update available, browse over to this forum, and spot a lot of posts claiming "the new update doesn't work" (not that this happens very often, but what if).  You might choose to delay the update in order to have uninterrupted service from your computer.

Or you might know that in the near future you really, really need your computer, and would rather not risk applying any software update for a few days until the need has passed.  Usually they go OK, but again, what if.

Just some thoughts.
