Quick scan Threat detected error
« on: June 25, 2014, 12:39:47 PM »
There was a Quick Scan (scheduled) completed and the completion screen shows there is a threat.
But, when I clicked on Show Results nothing opens.
I then went to Scan History and it shows that there were no virus' or problems.

Has anyone else seen this behavior?
How do I fix this problem?

Do you have avast set to generate a report?
What happens when you run another scan?

No.
There was no check mark to turn on the report generator.

I ran the Avast tool to remove Avast and reinstalled it.

I reset the schedule settings and will see what happens when it does another scan.

Why not manually start a scan to make sure?

You didn't need to do a clean install.
All you had to do was run another scan to see if you got the same results.

A new scan shows no threats this time.

My question was why would would the original scan show a threat but the history results showed no threat.

It was or is just a one time behavior. I hope.

The first detection "could have" been due to the latest vps update.
Or something went wrong during the first scan.
A more recent vps update "could have" fixed the false positive.
There lots of other unknown reasons.

All of the above is based completely on conjecture. I use the word conjecture
because I don't have all of the facts.

One thing I have found is that if avast "finds" an infection is to run another
scan just to double check.

To have avast generate a report...>Scan>Settings>Report File>tick the proper box.

The same thing has happened on both of my computers within the last 24 hours. The Quickscan is listed in the log but shows 0 threats detected. I ran a Full scan afterwards with nothing detected on either machine. Also, this post is in the BETA forum but I'm not running beta to my knowledge. I have version 2014.9.0.2012.

1) Download and install https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=151290.msg1099075#msg1099075
2) You should have posted here https://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2.0 since the beta test is over.

And since avast failed to detect any infections, I'd say you are good to go.
But please update to the latest release as it has several fixes.
v2014.9.0.2012 is an old version and it's always best to have the latest release.

That was a typo. I meant to say 2014.9.0.2021. Funny thing just happened tonight. Avast ran my daily scheduled Quickscan and found 1 threat. The funny thing about it is that the threat is "aswMBR.exe", an Avast scanner I downloaded a few weeks ago from bleepingcomputer.com. I just tried to download it again and Webshield popped up blocking the download. Both Webshield and the Quickscan said it's a Win32:Dropper-gen[DRP]. Any clue what this is and could it be related to the original issue?

Is there some reason you are downloading aswMBR? these tools are to be used under the guidance of qualified malware specialists.

There are plenty of free VPN clients around if you don't want to pay for Avast's that will give you ample protection when using free hotel internet.

All you need to run is a scan with avast which you can compliment with Malwarebytes, as mentioned aswMBR is to be used under the guidance of a qualified malware specialist.

No one seems to have insight into either of these problems. It must not be very common. I can only assume the original issue was some glitch in Avast and that aswMBR.exe was a false positive.
