Problem With Portforwarding
« on: June 27, 2014, 01:54:51 AM »
Hey, all. I am having an issue.

For GW2, they ask that you open four specific ports. I have forwarded them both on my modem/router (it's a combined thing; I'm with Bell) AND Windows Firewall. Now, after checking to see if the port is open (using a couple of websites), they all report my four ports are STILL closed. I am thinking it might be an issue with Avast, but I can't even figure out how to turn Avast Firewall off, let alone port forward on it.

Can anyone please help me? :s

EDIT: Figured how to turn Avast Firewall off, but it seems my ports still seem to be closed after forwarding them both on my router and Windows Firewall...

1)
Port forwarding and opening are two different things.

2)
Guildwars is a online game.
There is no need to have any ports open then 80 (and perhaps 8080) for the http traffic.

3)
Provide more information.
Keep in mind that we can't see your system/what is going, so you have to tell us.
What happens if you go to the website and try to play the game?
What exact version of avast do you have?
What windows version?

My avast is Avast Internet Security 2014.9.0.2018. Windows 7 64-bit.

In general, I have no issues. It's only when playing the game that I have some lag, and the devs recommended that users have those four ports open to reduce lag. As quoted from the support section:

"Guild Wars 2 requires TCP ports 80, 443, 6112 and port 6600 be fully unrestricted and accessible, both inbound and outbound. For further information about opening ports or port forwarding, you can visit the following website: http://www.portforward.com. Please note, this site is not affiliated with or supported by NCSOFT or ArenaNet."

443 only needs to be open if you connect with http over TLS/SSL.
The other two ports should not have to be open to play the game.

Lag can be caused by many things.
Do you have other malware detectors/removers installed?
If so which one(s)?

Are you getting the speed your ISP it telling you?

Try it a couple of times on different hours/days.

In that case, I am not sure why the devs said that. I supposed they aren't fully trained in ports and whatnot. I called my ISP asking about port forwarding and they told me no one in their support team is trained to help with port forwarding.

The only active software I have for virus protection and such is Avast, unless you also want to count Windows Defender.

Just tested; yeah, I am getting my promised DL and UL speed. It does waver a bit depending on the time of day, but not by much.

Sofar it looks to me that the guildware server can't handle the traffic when many players are online at the same time.

Disable windows defender and see if things improved.

As far as the speedtest...
It always vary a bit and normally you will not get the max that the isp says.
There is always a little "overhead".
So if you have a 10Mb downline and you get 9 it is ok.

Please download OTL and run it.
Attach the log to your post in ANSI format.
Perhaps you have something running that can cause the lag.
Checking it is a small thing to do and may give a clue or at least rule out things.

Wasn't sure if you wanted me to run it with GW2 and/or Windows Defender running or not, so I just did without them running. Anyway, here, I attached the texts.

Sorry for the double-post, but I have just been informed of something.

I've been told that inbound should be used only if I am hosting a server (website, multiplayer server for a game, etc.); otherwise, I should only open ports for outbound. However, GW2 support said the game needs unrestricted access via those ports both inbound and outbound. So I am kinda confused. Also this guy said this:

Quote
Some points will have 100% loss because they simply toss all traceroute packets. Others give them very low priority and may toss a couple here or there. 25 down and 10 up is good. You're not running into congestion problems there.

In response to the GW2 support, yeah, port forwarding is not called for here. If you are able to connect at all, this is definitely not the problem. Another couple things to check for: running netflix or some other streaming (music, whatever)? I used to be in a WoW guild where players were watching movies and streaming music while bitching about their latency... heh. Maybe there is something else that is less bandwidth intensive, but might be filling up your router's NAT table? (Which on a SOHO device is usually pretty low, but high enough for a few systems on the inside doing "normal" internet stuff.)
