You say you have tried everything but don't say what you have tried?
There may be something you have missed or don't know about, so without this knowledge it is hard to suggest anything.
What is it your are trying to scan?

Some information on your system wouldn't go amiss:
- What OS are you using? is it up to date?
- What avast! version and Home or Pro?

Some information on any errors/messages your may have received or are getting?

So as you can see the more information you can give us the easier it will be to help.

Using Xp /sp2
I go to all programs>>Avast and click on it and it will not open so I can scan for viruses!
When I open task manager it says it is running. I get no error messages.
I also tried from the Run command.

Right click avast icon, select Start avast! Antivirus. That will bring up the Simple User Interface where you can run on-demand scans.

Again what version of avast are you using Home or Pro?

Do you have any other av installed? If so which one?
Did you had another av installed? If so which one?
What other security (related) software do you have installed?
Already tried a repair of Avast?
Anything in Avast's log file about this?

I have no other AV. Avast has always worked great. I have ETrust Pest patrol running. Spyware guard, Spyware Doctor, running. I also scan but don't have running SpySweeper and Counter Spy. Sometimes I use Spybot and Adaware. I also tried  the Avast external Control with no luck! Also Sygate.

SpySweeper did previously have false positive detection with ashDisp.exe, the avast icon and GUI interface so this may be the culprit in removing your icon, see if there is a way to restore this from SpySweeper, ensure your SpySweeper signature/detection file is updated as this FP should have been fixed some time ago.

If you can't resolve it download the latest version of avast and  uninstall, reboot, install, reboot.

I'll try that. I have Avast 4.6. I redownloaded Avast external and was able to use scan on that. I did have a virus.
