7-Zip updated to 'beta' by Software Updater?
« on: July 16, 2014, 10:28:23 AM »
I think that the Software Updater is a good idea, but on noticing that it claimed 7-Zip Filemanager (9.20) needed to be updated, I did so thinking that I was not aware of the new update.

In fact, it updated to 7-Zip 9.22, which is in fact a beta. Although I believe it has been a beta for at least three years.

Has anyone else noticed this?

I have 7zip 9.32 (alpha) released on 01-12-2013
Avast shows that there is not a newer version although there is version 9.34 (alpha) released on 22-06-2014.

Yes, it's a tad confusing Eddy. I suppose if it's stable enough it should be OK.

Version 9.22.0.0

Maybe it works for the 64 bit version, the 32 bit version updated on my x86 laptop, but when I checked 7-Zip itself it claimed to be a beta. So I reinstalled the stable release 7-Zip from the installer.

Maybe you should check whether yours is the beta or not. It probably doesn't matter though, it appears however that development of 7-Zip has halted for a while.

Wiki:

I've never had a problem with any of their beta versions.
When it works as it should and there aren't any complaints, what's there to improve ??? :)

As long as it's stable you should be OK I suppose.

You'd much rather have a stable BETA rather than have the version with the security vulnerabilities.
Windows 10 Home 64-bit • Avast Free (latest stable version) •  Malwarebytes 4 Premium (On-Demand) • Windows Firewall Control • Google Chrome • LastPass • CCleaner • O&O ShutUp10 •

Good point, do you have any info on security vulnerabilities in the stable release?

I couldn't find much but I found this.

I had read somewhere before though where it did state the vulnerabilities of the older version.
