Stuck at SAFE MODE, does not accept password
« on: July 20, 2014, 07:37:45 AM »
I downloaded Avast Free and Avast Clean, when I ran Avast Clean it said I need to run in safe mode and now im stuck at windows 8 login screen because it is saying my password is wrong to log onto my PC.

My password is only a 4 Digit number for the sake of kids not playing with my PC, so it is not me using wrong password.

Any help would be appreciated.

This was a fresh install of v. 2021?  Was it the default install or custom install?

I never got to installing the Avast only the Avast Cleaner thinking it was something other than cleaner for Avast. After it asked If I wanted to go safe mode I pressed Ok and since then I have not been able to get past the login screen.

I have tried to fix it with Windows 8 install disk but none of the options are working. I get the message that the place windows is installed is locked by a antivirus program.

My PC also have Malwarebytes installed and HitmanPro, but they have worked very well so far. Was going to use Avast as the AV since I have no AV installed.

Make sure you have Avast v.2021 on your HD to reinstall.  What version of Avast are you running?

I would suggest that you uninstall Avast using the Avast uninstaller tool:
http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility.  Then Reboot.

If you don't have a cleaner like CCleaner http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/builds (select the Slim version on the bottom) and download it if you don't already have it on your machine to get rid of cache and temp. internet files.

Install Avast as a Custom install; only install the things you want and need, then reboot.  You don't need the Avast Clean with CCleaner, so do not install it.  Perhaps this caused the problem or if you upgraded Avast from a previous version this caused a problem, or if you had remnants of another AV or security software on your machine that can also cause a problem.  We may never know.

Try doing this and let us know if this solves the problem.

Also, what v. of Avast do you have?

It says safe mode but nothing works not even password so just been looking at a blue screen all the time.

I only installed the Avast Clean not the AV itself.

This is what I downloaded but never installed http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe

If I understand correctly...you did NOT install Avast AV itself, but you installed the Avast Cleaner?

Please tell me the following:

What security software do you have on your machine (AV, firewall, other security software) - both now and in the past.  If in the past, how did you remove it?

Yes.

Malwarebytes Pro and HitmanPro and also I have used AdwCleaner to remove PUP like Conduit.

I do not have any Antivirus installed.

This is the program I tried to install when the problem started so that I can not get into my PC

http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_clear.exe

I was thinking it is a cleaner like CCleaner.

I have tried to recover my PC to old point even by starting from BIOS to DVD drive. I have also tried to reinstall windows 8 but it will not let me. Everytime it say the place with Windows is locked by a AV. I have two HDs and im thinking if only I could make the windows 8 install on the second HD I could get into my PC and perhaps delete the problems.

Thanks for trying to help out though.

Could you download the following programme to a USB drive

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your USB.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.

Boot from the CD
Windows 8 screen shots

When you reboot you will  see this.

Select the language on this screen and keyboard on the next

Select the Trouble shoot option

Select Advanced  option

Select Command prompt

Insert the USB with FRST on it

At the command prompt type the following  :

The notepad opens. Under File menu select Open
Select "Computer" and find your flash drive letter and close the notepad.
In the command window type e:\frst64.exe and press Enter
Note: Replace letter e with the drive letter of your flash drive.
The tool will start to run.
When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.

Press Scan button.
It will make a log (FRST.txt) on the flash drive. Please copy and paste it to your reply.

In Command I get to the part where I type in flash drive location but I get this error message

"G" is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

Im running with Windows 8.1 version 6.2.9200
My X have sources written after it and not windows all though the cmd window has same text in the top blue part as the pictures you have posted.
