I recently tried to upgrade my Avast free version and after dowloading and installing it said it needed to restart. It's now been around an hour and I still have the "preparing to configure Windows Do not turn off your computer".
I don't know if it's safe to do a hard reset on my computer since it appears the restart is happening.
