Sorry, more or less the same. Google loads. Avast forums won't load (server not found). Minecraft.net loads, but the embedded YouTube video generates a server not found error.  Cnn.com doesn't load (server not found error).

I assume that other computers using the same router are not experiencing problems

Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
  • Flush DNS
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Reset IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • Reset FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Devices
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
  • List Minidump Files

Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.

Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.

Correct, other devices are connected without issue.

This didn't seem to make a difference.

(for List Devices I left Only Problems checked)

DNS request timed out.
    timeout was 2 seconds.
Server:  UnKnown
Address:  76.73.6.108
This appears to be a DNS problem.  Initially follow the steps here  http://www.pctools.com/kb/article/protection-software-resetting-your-dns-settings-519.html and let me know if that cures it

Nope, seems back to normal as far as I can tell. We'll be away from the laptop for the next few days, I think we can call this fixed.

Between Avast and MalwareBytes Premium, do you think he's in decent shape moving forward in terms of PUPs? I've explained that installers need to be watched very carefully.

I would recommend unchecky as well, even I use that :)

In that case methinks I will send you on your merry way :)

Subject to no further problems   :)

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so..The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset  System Restore points:

Click  Start  then Run.
On Windows7 or Vista  you may use  Start Search  field if  Run  is not available.
In the box copy/paste the following command:

ComboFix  /Uninstall

Note that there is a space between "  ComboFix  " and "  /Uninstall  " .

Then click  OK  (or press  Enter ).
Wait for the uninstall process to complete.

Download and run Delfix

: Keep Java Updated :

WARNING: Java is the #1 exploited program at this time. The Department of Homeland Security recommends that computer users disable Java
See this article

I would recommend that you completely uninstall Java unless you need it to run an important software.
In that instance I would recommend that you disable Java in your browsers until you need it for that software and then enable it. (See How to diasble Java in your web browser and How to unplug Java from the browser)

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes:

CryptoPrevent install this programme to lock down and prevent crypto ransome ware

Malwarebytes.
