A router with build in hardware firewall is the best.

Some routers have a built in Firewall.  Normally it's recommend you have both hardware (in your router) and software firewall (in your pc) to bring you multiple layer of protection.  :)

A simple answer to your question:

Sygate has more flexibility since you can set up your own rules but works well out of the box.

Zone Alarm is the easiest to use and requires little attention.

Both are stable with most OS platforms.

I use both.  Sygate works best on XP and ME while Zone Alarm seems to get along better on Windows 2000 and XP Professional.

Good luck.

I'm using Zone Alarm and it's somewhat perfect for my PC; if you're a novice to firewalls configurations, use Zone Alarm.  Sygate is still a great firewall but configurations are a bit advance.

thanks all

yea I still have a lot to learn about computers
it's much harder to learn when I'm near people
because I have a paranoia problem it's pretty difficult for me
especially when I'm afraid to touch my own bookbag and think it's poisoned

Hello Yinyang4evry1,

They are more or less equal. It is what suits you best. With an additional program (free) you can log whatever ZA does. Eddy is right in this respect that software firewalls can be taken out by certain malware. Libpcap traffic goes right underneath the software firewall, it cannot be seen by the software firewalls. A hardware software solution is better in this respect.
Want to turn your comp into Fort Knox. Follow this recipee take an old small Win comp strip it and install a Open Source firewall there on Linux as a first line of defense, there is very good Swiss software for this. Yyou can twweak and tune this portal  to your likings, even with sunrouting installs, a clever hacker who could put a finger through there, when you are sitting behind this.

greets,

Cybersecurity is more of an attitude than anything else. Avast Evangelists.

Use NoScript, a limited user account and a virtual machine and be safe(r)!

I'm just testing which software is best for me now. Though I don't know how to get hands on a router. My family poor and I'm only 14.

There's something that bothers me.
On the Sygate Firewall, where the application rules are, I right-click and see options like: block, allow, terminate.
What does it mean by terminate?
I mean, does it only remove the program rule or does it "terminate" and destroy the program?

Thanks :)

Not destroy or delete the program but, maybe, close it  8)

??? Which firewall is more recommended?
Sygate Personal Firewall or ZoneAlarm Firewall
Sygate is more 'stable' and if you're not using a proxy annonimizer application you can use it with safe.
ZA is more 'strong' but also could bring troubles and conflicts. Frequent updates and software improvements.
If you're affraid, use Sygate. If you like a software with continuous improvements, ZA.
I've used both. ZA is better in my opinion.

Well, we're forgeting lots of others... just answering the first question: Which firewall is more recommended? Sygate Personal Firewall or ZoneAlarm Firewall

Outpost is a very good one too. The free version is not as updated as the Pro one but works very well.
