hey do you have any third party firewall installed on your computers? like comodo, outpost that could interfear with the avast one?

if so you have to uninstall that one before activate the avast one.

I also have the same problem. avast is the only firewall in my computer. I uninstal, reinstall, register but still is not working. What else must I do to turn it on?

Repair avast!:
1. Control Panel -> Add/Remove programs -> avast!
2. Click on 'Repair'.
3. Follow instructions.
4. Reboot.

I have a similar problem - tried the solutions mentioned above more than once.
Also tried this suggestion:
Try a clean install.
Download and save http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
                                http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_pro_antivirus_setup.exe
                                http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_internet_security_setup.exe
                                http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_premier_antivirus_setup.exe

Download and save http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility

Reboot into safe mode>Run uninstaller for each version of avast you have>reboot into normal mode>install the version of avast you selected
above>register(Free)/insert license (Pro, AIS or Premier)>reboot  :)

So far I have spent the better part of a day trying to find & fix this problem with no forward progress to show.

Thanks for any help to get traction.

Since there are several of you with the same problem:

1. Are you all using Avast Internet Security (AIS), and if so what version are you trying to install or use?

2. Do you have a 3rd party firewall (FW) installed on the machine?  If so, you need to uninstall it per the vendor's instructions prior to installing AIS.

3. Here is the download file for installing the current version for AIS:  http://www.avast.com/en-us/download-software - click on the bottom, 3rd down is AIS

4. Here is the Avast Uninstaller Tool: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility
