This one's very simple:

I've just re-installed Avast Internet Security after a reformat and re-install of Win 8.1 (done because Chrome kept redirecting me from legitimate sites to lpmxp[random number] websites stuffed with scareware).

I've just noticed that Avast IS has not automatically disabled Win 8.1's firewall in favour of its own, which most antivirus and firewall packages tend to do. Should I leave Win 8.1's firewall running or should I disable it?

Leave it running.

If my memory serves me correctly, the firewall in avast! IS turns off the windows firewall.

That's what I thought, which is why haven't bothered to check when I set it up on my previous Win 8.1 install. However, Windows Action Centre tells me that both firewalls are on.

Asyn: thanks for the swift response. Sure it won't cause any problems?

If avast did or did not disable the windows firewall, there is no need to run two.
Disable the windows one.

So I'm still not sure which route to go down here.

Asyn says to leave both running, Eddy says that I should disable Windows Firewall.

I'm not concerned about intrusion prevention, because my router has a built-in NAT firewall. I am concerned about effectively controlling which programs on my PC get to communicate with the outside world.

Well, you can run them togehter but don't have to. Basically, it's your decision. ;)
