Java Update 8.0.20.26 on Software Updater
« on: August 24, 2014, 01:48:55 AM »
Why on earth will Avast Software Updater show Java 8.0.20.26 as the latest version of Avast Free Edition clearly when it's main page shows Java version 7 Update 67 is the latest version? Even Java Update via Control panel says my Java is up-to-date. (See screenshot). When i click on details this page comes up http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/8u20-relnotes-2257729.html

This is the second time it came up. The first time it did come up and i clicked on update. It takes ages and a very long time to update and it seems to me that it wasn't working. So i restarted my laptop and did a repair on avast and again i restarted my laptop. This time I won't be doing that again.

The latest version of Java which I have is here http://java.com/en/download/index.jsp

Is Java 8.0.20.26 currently on beta? It seems to me that it doesn't show up on the Java download page?

Avast can you please fix this issue about Java 8.0 showing up on Avast Software Updater it may look like to me that it's a bug of some sort or something is different or something is wrong! Thanks.

Hello Staticguy. I have just started a new topic on the subject as I did not realise there was one already started. I have uninstalled Java 8 update 20 leaving the 7 update 67 version intact. Although Avast software updater indicates Java 8 as an environmental download it is a development kit version. As you say, the Java site only shows Java 7 update 67 as the latest version. As I was typing this message Avast popped a panel up saying program updates need to be installed, this appertaining to the Java 8 update.

Thanks for your response exakta. Why would avast pop up a message saying an Update to Java is available and it's an environmental download and it's a development kit version. I ain't going to download that stuff because I am a home user and clearly don't want to take any risks and ruin my laptop. Can't avast notify this when the final version of Java 8 is available to all user when it's get finalized.

I hope Avast will fix this as soon as possible. If they don't fix this as soon as possible I will be sending them a support ticket.

@ staticguy,

Some versions are for developers.  What I recommend is looking at the Software Updater to alert me about an update, but I go to the vendor's site to actually update it (or sometimes you find it here on the forum under General Topics).  There has been a known glitch about what you are referring to and this should be fixed with the next Avast release.

You should also uninstall things associated with adobe with their uninstaller tool (avail. from their site) prior to installing their new version as well (example flash uninstaller tool - I keep it on my desktop since it changes so often!). ::)

Hello SafeSurf,

Yeah I understand that developers always wants to try new software test it and such such. The only reason I have is that why would it show up in Avast Software Updater since users like me are home users... Avast Software Updater doesn't give me any issues about flash developer program, adobe, and etc etc and it only gives me developers tools for Java update in Avast Software Updater other than that all other programs listed in my Avast Software Updater is A+ if there's an update for like flash or adobe via Avast software updater it straights away direct me to the official download site of that program or even if I don't want to do that I can simply use the program's updater to update to the next major release version of that particular program whether it is flash, adobe reader, or etc.

I use to check for updates for Java via Java updater from control panel if there's an update i simply update it through there. I sometimes even use Revo Uninstaller to uninstall previous version of program such as adobe reader and etc and go to the official website of that program to download the latest version. I don't have any program's unisntaller tool. The only uninstaller tool i use is for avast if only something goes wrong.

Here is another user with the same problem.  I posted in her thread the Java uninstaller tool from the vendor's site -- you can use this as well to remove all previous versions of the software, which is wise to do since malware can get into older versions.

I will be doing a complete uninstall of Java via Revo uninstaller and check it with the Java Uninstaller Tool in 3 days because my broadband speed is gone lol. Yes I am completely aware of malware getting into older versions of programs and application hence that's the reason I always keep my programs and software updated whether it is a minor or major update. Learned it from many previous experience  :)

Revo will work too, just be careful of the registries you delete.  Let us know if we can provide any more assistance.  Thank you. :)

Yeah will do. Just now I read your comment to this similar post and the instruction that you have to that user. I will use revo and will be careful with the registries and do another restart. Use the java uninstaller utility do another restart. Install the latest version of Java (not developer) and do another restart. Will let you know if i need any more assistance. You have a great day  8)

This is not the first time I've seen Avast Software Updater report that there is a new version of Java when Java Version Check on site reports I have the latest version and Java consul tells me I've the latest version. Considering that the Java Consul checks for updates by default and then informs you of them the easiest way around this is just to click on Ignore This Update on Avast's Software Update and let Java take over its update accurately. Result...no more confusing notifications that can mess up your computer if you are inexperienced.

Once I install version 8, can I then remove version 7 ???

Yes, unless you have some applet that specifically looks for JRE 7.

Just been made aware of this thread.  :-[

I had removed version 7 due to problems as per this thread, but have since put it back on my laptop, version 8 still shows as a possible update via Avast although I have clicked on to ignore updates on it for the moment.

If I wait till 8 is out of development will the Avast updater automatically update 7 to version 8, or will I need to uninstall 7 first manually then install 8?

Which is the best link for the version 8 that's been talked about?
