How to submit a virus for inspection
« on: August 05, 2005, 01:25:08 AM »
Hello, I a newbie and have only used the home free addition for a couple of days. I have tagged a virus called
Java.Trojan.Exploit.Bytverify which is hidden in a Zip file. Avast doesn't  catch it. I found it using another product called A Squared Trojan scanner. It was found in my Sun Java Cache which made it fairly harmless, but even when I moved the zip file to My Doc folder, Avast ignored it.

My question is would the authors of Avast enjoy taking a look at it. If so,  how can I submitt it for inspection. I ran it though an on line virus sanner called Virustota at his link:

http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html

15 out of 20 AV programs id'd it- Avast did not. You assistance is most appreciated.  I'm looking forward to learning more here and plan to visit the forum often. Nice board indeed.  :)

Hi grummy, you may send the possibly infected file in a zip-compress folder to virus@avast.com (if necessary, you may also have to send your password to open the compress folder.)

Thank you Fixer. My Yahoo account wouldn't allow me to attache the  file even while zipped , it said it couldn't clean it. So I tried it again using the email provided by my ISP and this time I double zipped it. It seems to have been sent so I'm hoping it worked. BTW here is the scan result fron the other engines:

This is a report processed by VirusTotal on 08/05/2005 at 01:00:59 (CET) after scanning the file "count.jar-387220ad-1781b5fd.zip" file.

Currently, I realize there is not any solution that offers a 100% effectiveness rate for detecting viruses and malware. I just hope my efforts will help. I really like Avast, and plan to move up to the paid Pro version in the near future. The features are really super and the interface is extra nice. Runs very smoothly on my box.
