I get a message saying that my POP3 and SMTP isnt protected, error number 10049
any ideas?

What EXACT version of Avast?
What do you use as email client?
What other security (related) software do you have?

First off left click the avast icon and ensure the providers are running.
Second check the avast providers are enabled in services.
