Cannot connect to update servers

My computer tells me my avast needs updated, but I get errors connecting to servers.  I sent a help email to avast, and they do not respond....I guess I would like some of the support for which I have paid.  Thanks

What OS/SP?
What exact version of avast?
Any other security software installed/enabled?
