Problem with Avast start up

When I power up the PC Avast icon in the start up tray is orange but after a short while, I get a red cross saying unprotected and then after about 15-20 secs goes yellow saying part protected and then further delay to go all green. I'm concerned that in this interim period I'm open to problems. It never used to do this. I also have Malwarebytes installed. Does anyone have any thoughts? I have done a clean reinstall of Avast but didn't help.

I have the free version 2014.9.0.2021, virus definitions 140925-1.
I have Malwarebytes installed, premium version
OS is Windows 7x64
I have used Avast for years.

1. Download avast! Free Antivirus: http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
2. Follow instructions: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed avast! versions..!!)
3. Reinstall avast! with the downloaded installer from point 1.
4. Reboot.

I'll try that - have done it already as mentioned in first post, so assume the link you've provided is for a newer version?

Think it must have been because although I've only powered up and down a couple of times since - problem seems to have gone away. Thanks for your help.
