On the system tray, the Avast icon is showing activity from Avast. But there is no scan or other launch/schedule action from Avast that I know off. It is not the update either.

This has been going on for 10 minutes now.

What is it doing and how can I check what it is doing?

Thanks

Check what processes you have running.
It can be avast is scanning something that runs in the background.

how can I check what it is doing?

You can often see what processes are accessing what files by running the Windows Resource Monitor tool.

Well from my perspective, that's always been a problem with "animated icons" on Security software as users see it, and wonder what's going on not seeing it as the software simply doing its work.  ;D

avast have realtime protection, meaning any file that moves/data traffic in/out when your computer is on is scanned
so maybe windows index is running, torrent program, skype or similar.....
