Avast typically uses 50% of my CPU capacity when I'm on-line

Hi, can anyone tell me please if this is normal? Avast is using around 50% of my CPU capacity when I'm on-line; leaving little capacity for other processes and I freeze often. Is there a fix please? I'm using Vista on a laptop with a 2ghz processor. (If that's the right jargon...... )

It can be normal.
It depends on what you do online, the browser you are using, what sites you are visiting and many other things.
