I am running my avast scanner on my desktop and it comes up with the message current scanner status infected. Do I need to uninstall and then reinstall it. The one on my laptop does not read that way. Should I redownload it ?

It means your system is infected.
If you have XP, shedule a boot scan and let Avast deal with it.
