Although late for advice in installing avast!. You still can make sure, if you have any remnants of other AVs, to apply its uninstall tool so that those traces do not bother avast!

Use these sites to execute uninstall utilities for other AVs.

Also the new MBAM 2 takes a lot in XP systems. If you have its protection modules active you may try it with them off for a while, and see how your system runs. You still can run MBAM as a secundary weekly scan.

Similar experience for me too. I had a forced update imposed on me by MBAM  'free' to v.2 a couple of months ago.  I have always disabled automatic definition updates but mysteriously an automatic update for the program itself kicked in after one manual definitions update.  I didn't like this at all but I thought I'd still give it a fair trial.

I use MBAM simply as an on demand scanner as it compliments AVAST without issue. On the rare occasions I get anything unwanted on my system which AVAST has let through it has proved valuable for identifying and remove it.

MBAM has always been slow to boot initially on my system (30 secs) but v.2 was at least twice as slow and the first part of the scan itself where  it is "..enumerating registry objects...." took even longer.  This rendered its use totally impractical so I asked if there was a solution on the MBAM forum. A few things were suggested which I tried, like a full clean uninstall/reinstall (where have I heard that before? :))  but to no effect.

I cleaned it out and reinstalled my old version and I've stuck with that ever since making absolutely certain all the right boxes are ticked to opt out of any future attempt to automatically update.

I hear ya Cluster ... sometimes you just have to know what works in conjunction with your system. As long as it's effective, you do what you gotta do to stick with it.

After several hours today, it appears that disabling AOS is effective. Again there is a touch of unresponsiveness and once I had to stop loading to refresh in order to get to a webpage ... but the situation is definitely something I can live with.

Gratitude to all who chimed in to offer help and suggestions. *bow*

I remain a loyal Avast! user :)

I also have MBAM Pro but since updating to version 2, I'm now using it strictly on demand.
It simply uses too much system resources.
