With some AV's, that MPCmd thing still runs even when Defender is disabled. I don't know if it does for all but I know for a fact that it did when I was using Bitdefender Free.

It gets turned off when install in Avast which is what's important on this forum.

Still a good hack to have and Defender doesn't have to be running to add it, many users like myself run multiple systems with numerous AV's, Defender being one of them

Sorry Bob, but no it doesn't. Defender itself gets turned off but the file I mentioned still runs and turns Defender back on if no other AV is detected.

That's correct. It's actually a good thing so that when you remove your current AV, you are never left totally unprotected.

Lol, same here. I'm holding out on my Win 7 laptop but may eventually give in and upgrade it. It seems like everything I have on it will run in 10. Win 10 is a great OS and better in every way under the hood than 7. The "spyware" stuff is nonsense since every version of Windows, Android, MacOS, and maybe even the mostly irrelevant Linux do much the same things. The biggest difference in 10 is that they tell you about it. Even if Linux doesn't do it, I wouldn't use it. I have tried a few different distros and hated them all.

I've always been a fan of the SmartScreen filtering since IE7 days. It's great to see it's been expanded even further now. It has always been my primary anti-phishing protection and has picked up on quite a few bad sites over the years. It actually works better than the phishing protection in some third party Antivirus programs which has been shown in tests. It's one of the reasons why I have always used IE as my default browser. (Of course there are other reasons like handling of cookies, favorites and downloads which I greatly prefer in IE.)

@Dch48: In my own tests its not that good in blocking phishing sites, but i guess Microsoft has more in the works i hope also regarding Defender, like a new UI, better Zero-Day, etc.
