Windows as a service: Simplified and Aligned
https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/windowsitpro/2017/07/27/waas-simplified-and-aligned/

Quote
As we announced back in April, Microsoft is aligning our servicing models with twice-per-year feature update releases targeting March and September, and 18-month servicing timelines for each release.  While the first fully-aligned release will occur later this year with the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update release and a corresponding Office 365 ProPlus release, we got a head start with the Windows 10 1703 release (a.k.a. Creators Update):  It marks the first of our semi-annual releases, each of which will be serviced for 18 months.

Painstakingly slow. I started this changeover on one of my computers at 7:00 AM

I took this picture at 9:45 AM. Patience is a virtue. At my age, I can't afford to many more virtues. :)

After a very lengthy update on my Windows 10 running insider preview builds (build 16257)
After the system started, I was greeted with the following notice in Edge:

I'm now busy exploring. :)

Bob is the fall creators update different to the creators update ?

The reason I ask is my win10 laptop is still sitting on the Anniversary update, Version 1607 (OS Build 14393.1480), I have been getting my Patch Tuesday updates, but haven't been offered the Creators update yet.

EDIT: Added image.

The preview build that's currently running on this system will be release to the GP in September.
Sounds like you've blocked your update to the Anniversary update and may need to get it manually.

I hadn't blocked it as far as I'm aware, I thought that Version 1607 (OS Build 14393.1480) was the Anniversary update.

What confused me was the two different references to the Creators update, earlier this year March/April time I was hearing about the Creators update and more recently the Fall Creators Update.

I thought it was something that when it was your turn in the barrel you would be offered it and it wasn't/hasn't been offered and I'm not on the insiders preview program.

I still see some systems here on my travels that haven't received the Creators Update (1703) as of yet, as I slowly get around to them I'll manually update them with the Upgrade Assistant tool.

@DavidR , there will be a lot of changes between the two creators editions, removed or depreciated features https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4034825/features-that-are-removed-or-deprecated-in-windows-10-fall-creators-up

Aside from security improvements https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/mmpc/2017/06/27/whats-new-in-windows-defender-atp-fall-creators-update/  several other new features being added https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/upcoming-features

Many more discussions happening over on the Wilders forums about the new features and changes :)

Thanks Craig,

I'm not so much concerned about the feature content as such, that is pretty much outside our control. My concern is the confusion surrounding the naming of updates, when you have two that are almost identical, yet so different (in feature sets). MS talk of update names and very little on the actual version number.

So I haven't even got the first Creators update and MS is already talking about dropping Update support for users that haven't got to a certain version number (and they aren't talking update names at this point). More confusion whilst their party line appears to be just wait and you will be offered the 'Creators' update of whatever flavour that happens to be and so far it hasn't been offered.

So far it looks like it will have to be a manual update, but searches for the Upgrade Assistant tool have led to all sorts of different and unrelated locations.

Here you go :) https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Use the top tab - update now, which will download the assistant for you.

Thanks, I think I must have been all around that.

I would have thought logically they could have put a link or even a download option in the Windows Update area.

While David is updating, I'm downdating....

This is an old HP Elite 64 bit system with 3 GB of Ram. It started out with Vista.
I upgraded it to Windows 8.1 and subsequently to Windows 10. It's been on the
Windows insider preview builds of Windows 10 since shortly after upgrading to Windows 10.
After I had a chance to do some exploring of the latest Windows 10 release soon to be
available, I decided it was time for a fresh start. I'm keeping my personal stuff and settings
but ditching everything else. Once that's done, I'll use Ninite to install what I want back on the system.
