I installed the 291 "optional" update and thought it odd it was listed as 'optional' ???

I will wait until after my weekly backup before installing it.

What does Firefox have to do with Windows 10?

It is about the means of delivering the payload that can trigger the corruption. It has to get on your system somehow to be able to be exploited.

Presumably there are other means of delivery, so until MS closes this hole, win10 users are still vulnerable.

It still pertains to Firefox - If you're not using FF, this doesn't do a thing for you.
If you use Windows 10 and don't want to wait for Microsoft to fix this bug,
Here's a temporary fix for those running Windows 10.

Windows 10 NTFS corruption bug unofficial fix.
Download the driver from here:
https://github.com/OSRDrivers/i30Flt/releases/tag/v1.0
To install the driver after it's been downloaded and you've extracted the .zip file to a folder you can locate.
Open an elevated command prompt, and then navigate to the folder you extracted the files to.
Once in the folder with the files, you can run the following commands to install the driver.

RUNDLL32.EXE SETUPAPI.DLL,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 .\i30flt.inf

wevtutil im i30flt.man

fltmc load i30flt

A system restart is not required.
Once OSR's driver is installed, if it detects an attempt to access a path containing "$i30:",
it will block it and generate an event log.

Microsoft fixes Windows 10 drive corruption bug — what you need to know
https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/microsoft/microsoft-fixes-windows-10-drive-corruption-bug-what-you-need-to-know/

Note: Unfortunately, this fix has only landed in the Windows 10 Insider 'Dev' channel and not the Windows 10 21H1 'Beta' preview, the next feature update to be released this spring. Unless Microsoft uplifts this fix to a Windows version being released sooner, we will likely be stuck with this bug for some time.

Guys, am I the only one who had troubles with recent Win.10 updates? Some of the files simply didn't want to run.

If as you suspect (from your other post, https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=231530.msg1587835#msg1587835) this is Avast SecureLine VPN issue, then it has no place in this topic.  Stick with your other post in the Avast SecureLine VPN  section of the forums.  That said it doesn't seem directly related to that topic either, so it may be better to start your own new topic in the Avast SecureLine VPN  sub-forum of the forums.
