Might be all speculation at best. Only time will tell.

Pure speculation. There has been no indication anywhere that Windows is going to become subscription based. I have no idea where they're getting that from and they provide nothing to support the notion. You'll have to pay for it if you don't take advantage of the free upgrade within a year, and you will pay for it on any new computers you purchase or build but that's all that has been confirmed so far.

As soon as I read the article about W10 being the 'last Windows Version'(paraphrased) I thought immediately that a "yearly paid subscription" is coming in the wind.
That wouldn't surprise me at all.

I did not have that reaction at all. It simply meant to me that you would get free updates for your existing machine but would have to pay for it on new ones. Anything else would be pure inference.

It is happening to more and more software. The OS is nothing more than a large and complex program.
It makes sense that it will eventually be treated like all other software programs.

I'm not sure if it makes sense(from a user perspective) or whether I like the idea, I mean Paid for xp, W8-8.1 and never looked at cost again.
Having said that I agree with you from MS perspective.....it's coming

They said free updates for the life of the machine. I expect them to stand by that.

I read that part, however it also stated there will be versions it said that will be exempt from the "free updates for life" they were Enterprise Editions etc.
However, the home user will, as you pointed out, get the free updates.

The question is who sets the life expectancy of the machine ???

You do. As long as you are still using it, it's alive.

That is your interpretation. I'd prefer if that came from MS which it has not. :)
