They said free updates for the life of the machine. I expect them to stand by that.
The question is who sets the life expectancy of the machine ???
You do. As long as you are still using it, it's alive.
That is your interpretation. I'd prefer if that came from MS which it has not. :)
That is exactly what they said. "Lifetime of the machine" means as long as it is useable. There can be no other interpretation. Anything else is FUD nonsense.

Sorry DCH48 but all things have a life-expectancy. This includes includes computers.
I'm sure Microsoft will define it's meaning before Windows 10 is release.

Of course everything has a life expectancy but, they didn't say that. They said , for the life of the machine. We have a life expectancy too but does that mean everybody lives that long and only that long? Of course not.

Life of the machine means until it burns out or blows up or is just scrapped for something new. Your Windows license lasts until you get a new computer. Then, you will have to pay in one way or another. That, in a nutshell, is what they have said.

If I am not keen to reserve this update can you please let me know what are the two windows update to uninstall so Windows 10 won't install on my laptop? Just want to have a secondary plan. Also will I get this pop up again if I close it? Thanks  :)

Right click on the icon and check your upgrade status, your system has already been scanned for compatibility.

Why don't you click on the windows updates then use the more information link to see what the updates are ;)

Go to your system provider and download the most recent updates to fix incompatibilities.

For anyone who for what ever reason doesn't want to see this new icon in the system tray or,
doesn't want to update to windows 10 for Free, it's simple:
You will need to uninstall the Windows Update KB3035583 and that should get rid of the icon, alternatively you can simply hide the icon too.

Simply hiding the icon only works until the next reboot ... then it comes straight back again.
